B747 and 777 at Rocky

I saw something very surreal today and I couldn't quite believe my eyes.
Turned up at Rockhampton for an 8.00am Departure and there was a Singapore Airlines 747-400 taxiing for take off. It leapt into the sky with a 10-15kt tailwind. Shortly after a Singapore Airlines 777 Landed on the opposite runway.
Maybe the 747 had diverted into rocky due to the Thunderstorms? Does anyone know why these two aircraft were at Rockhampton?

They probably brought Singapore troops in for exercises and departed empty. It's been a regular thing for years.

Cheers

I remember hearing a couple of years back that SQ or the Singaporean government (one and the same really! ) paid for the runway extensions at Rocky a bunch of years ago specifically so it could handle direct flights to and from SIN with a full load of troops and all their crap. Don't know the truth in the story but there you go!

They will be back to return the troops to SIN on November 3. I was told the Rocky Council paid for the runway extension, expressly to attract the SIN armed forces - having 700+ troops in town must be good for the local economy.

It's very good for the economy. Days off in SIN are for shopping; the 2nd national sport to Soccer.

Where Aussies would go to the pub or beach, Singaporeans go shopping.

Smart local government!!

G'day
