Flight Centre

Hello all,

Firstly my apologies if this is in the wrong place, I was unsure of where to post this. So I hope here is ok!

Flight Centre are recruiting International Travel Consultants - and as I am currently unemployed and on an active hold with an airline, I figured I may as well apply, due to not knowing when things might start moving.

So was wondering if anyone has worked for them before or knows of what they are like to work for?

The pay is alright, they pay a base of $40,000, and I think maybe commissions on top of that.

Yet my old boss at Ansett, used to work as a travel consultant and said it was the worst job she has ever done.......

Can anyone help me out?

Your comments or experiences would be heaps appreciated.

Many thanks, and have a great night!

Raver

Hi Raver,

If you aren't working at the moment its worth giving it a go.

As part of Flight Centres recruitment procedure they will have you working in a branch for half a day. This is to see if you fit in with the team.

Good luck with the airline recruitment.

I had a friend that worked there and lasted about 3 months, wanted to leave after a week, lots of issues but overall hated it, and the 'promised' pay doesn't generally eventualise, and you end up working 12-14 hour days to get what you could get in retail.

travel

hey hey

i worked (and still dabble a bit here and there) in travel since 1997, its a great industry but bloody hard work.

not sure if flight centre is a good starting option, many of my mates have tried but didnt cut it after 3 months.

I dont want to put u off, but hey if u wanna try it go for it.

the perks are pretty good, and they do look after their staff. But u gotta be prepared to work decent hours (up to 10-12 hour days) to really earn some decent cash

My girlie applied to Flight Centre as well and after attending interview decided it wasn't worth it.

The so called "salary package" of $38000- worked out to be a base wage of about $24000- plus superannuation plus bonuses (calculated on you achieving your minimum sales target every month) Also take into account the length of training you have to do, ie there will be no sales so be only getting paid base wage.
Hours she was expected to work was 8am - 6pm M-F plus some Saturdays and overtime

All in all, I don't think it pays that well for what you have to do

I ex crew and was considering applying to Flight Centre and it's interesting reading all these comments, so a big thank you to everyone.

One thing that did make me wonder was that FC seem to recruit an awful lot, which says to me, high turnover of staff rather than expansion. When I see that in any company then alarm bells ring in my head. Having said that, I know that in the UK, retail travel doesn't pay well anyway, if you want better $'s then corporate travel is better.

Hi Raver
OK, gotta admit I am a flighty! I have been in Oz since last October and started with them in Feb. They are alright compared to some companies I have worked for. They do have some excellent perks. (Got a $2500 outback trip for nothing, going to India in 3 weeks for the price of a couple of nights out in BNE, monthly nights out (free grog and food), conferences and there are more free women than you can shake a stick at!
But!!! As with any job there is also the .
Yeah I used to work long hours, but more time management problems with myself than anything else!! Got that sorted now and most days I work 8.15 - 5.45 with a 20 min lunch. Dealing with Joe Public is also a bitch as I forgot how many idiots are out there, and it can be frustrating sometimes. You are also responsible for your own mistakes, so if you screw up, it can prove costly to your end of month commission. They do demand and if you dont produce then its cya later.
I have had a ball since starting with them and have met some reall good friends also.
But I would drop them tomorrow if that flying job appeared!

I just keep the attitude that they support me and my flying, I work in their office and drink their grog and thats about it!
They may have a high turnover but they are also tough to get into. Less than 1 in every 1000 applicants get in! (or so I am told!)
Best of luck whatever you choose

Regards

CB

Hi raver,

Im currently doing a tafe course (retail travel sales) and am looking to get in at flight centre.

i have a few friends who are already working there. FC is as good as you make it, you are expected to meet a comm target, if you keep up at you target you will get your 38K if you dont you wont be there for long. That said because you are working on commission your pay is only as high as your willing to work. Targets arent hard to meet, because of the flight centre brand you literally have a line up. In your first couple of months they do realise that your new and let you get away with not hitting your target but after a few months ppl will start to ask questions. You only have to look at the wages consultants get paid at other agencies to realize FC is pretty good - but they work you for it.

FC has been voted Australia best employer 2002 2003 and highly commended this year.

It all depends on what kind of job you’re suited to. FC is always busy and it can be quite stressful (specially when things go wrong) and because you want a nice fat pay packet your not going to go for lunch while there is a prospective client waiting.

btw. expect to do the cleaning vacuuming yourself - paying a cleaner would come out of your commissions lol

I just spent a fair bit of money there for the Griswold family Christmas travels , great service, fun people and very very sharp.

They or that particular consultant will get my money every time.

Don't go there as a "fill in" job "waiting for something better" because I gaurantee you will fail.

Give it your heart, you will meet some wonderful people and some awful ones too, but they are just part of the rich fabric of life and will give you a life skills education that will hold you in really good stead as a crew manager, a skill sadly lacking in many.

Girls, and plenty of them.

Not such a bad company to work for, I did my 3 years while saving and compleating my licences a couple of years ago. Lots of willing scenic flight passengers in the company willing to have a bit of fun on the weekends.

There are many different avenues withing FC where you can work but what has been said covers most of it. If you can get into the training and temping side of it the money is great.

All the fun is in the state, national and world parties. Over 1000 people, 80% female, of the 20% left over, only about 2% of those are straight, not bad odds in my book.
