Crop Duster Stolen
This is weird...
My Dad just called me after having just been listening to 2UE (Sydney) where a woman has phoned John Laws asking for help after having her crop duster stolen from her property in the early hours of Saturday morning. She said the police haven't been able to find it (not sure of details here).
Supposedly there was no fuel in it, yet someone has been able to fill her up, and nick it without anyone hearing a thing. The woman said they had left the keys in it and it was last was seen heading north towards Qld. My dad couldn't remember the town closest to the property but he did say the aircraft had 'Hardy's Aviation' written on the side.
Anyone heard anything?

Stolen Aircraft
Heard the same broadcast.
Aircraft was a crop duster biplane with HARDY AVIATION painted on sides of fuselage,
Town mentioned sounded like Jiranbandee but can't find it on a map.
Apparently the rustlers had to refuel with oil and avgas and disappear into the wide black yonder at night.
Perhaps this is the beginnings of a "rebadging" enterprise for aircraft instead of cars.
Dirranbandi? If so, it's in south west Queensland.

There seems to have been a huge increase in the amount of cattle rustling both in NSW and Victoria since the beginning of this year. Perhaps rural Australia is becoming more of a target for crime??? (organised or disorganised?)

Why would the thing have to be refuelled and oiled??
My understanding is depending on operational requirments, it is best to keep the tanks full to avoid condensation within the tank. Or has that gone out the window with modern day thinking and all that. May I have lost the plot.

Affirm
Yeah a red Grumman AgCat.
One of the local Aero Club members rather enthusiastically rang the "alert but not alarmed" Hotline and informed them of the performace and payload of an AgCat, telling them it would be perfect for carrying a Berm.
Lifted from Dirranbandi, just south of St George QLD.
More likely just plain stolen than anything more sinister I would have thought...

True that montys ex teaboy...doesn't mean they bothered to refuel though. As I mentioned, that was what I heard from a secondary source. Guess they were tired after a hard day gassing bugs.

Red Ag-Cat currawong? Surely not the Phantom's aircraft (from the movie)? It crashed in the movie, but I'm sure I saw it recently on a pontoon on the Gold Coast?

Here it is
From the ABC website

Last Update: Wednesday, May 12, 2004. 5:33pm (AEST)
Missing plane touches down in Taroom
A vintage crop-dusting plane stolen from a south-western Queensland property has been located more than 400 kilometres away.
The 50-year-old aircraft was taken from a station south-west of Dirranbandi on Saturday.
It was found abandoned near Taroom this morning after apparently landing due to engine failure.
Police are still looking for the high-flying thief.

Crop Duster Stolen
The Brisbane Courier-Mail newspaper had a report in last Wednesday's issue and it seems to do nothing to enhance the media's reputation for looseness with reporting.
In particular the reporter described the Agcat (quote) "The model was similar to a Tiger Moth, except it had a 450hp engine"

I had meant to post in the existing thread on this subject but c@cked up and ended up starting a new one - sorry.
I don't know about crop dusters and how much hp they can have, I just thought saying the Agcat was similar to a Tiger Moth was a bit rich. They are both biplanes I suppose.......
Cheers

Have heard the "thief" was the lawful owner.
Complainant bought the aircraft but "neglected " to pay for it.
In short, a REPO.
Ag-cat powerplants range from 450 to 1200 HP, Radial and Turbine.
So yes, much like a Tiger Moth.
