New Zealand Pilot Killed
May 8, 2004
A SMALL plane carrying students on a field trip crashed in southern Sudan, killing 12 children, a pilot from New Zealand and an adult chaperone, an aid worker said today.
The Czech-built LET-410 crashed shortly after takeoff yesterday on a trip between two towns in the Upper Nile province, part of rebel-held southern Sudan, said Dan Eiff, the Sudan co-ordinator for Norwegian People's Aid.
"It was in the air and then it just collapsed. I think the engine failed," said Mr Eiff, who witnessed the crash near Nur, 1600km south of Khartoum. "It crashed near the village."
One of the pilots, from New Zealand, was killed, while the other survived.
Four Sudanese children also survived and all were taken to a hospital for treatment, Mr Eiff said.
The plane belonged to a charter company and regularly operated in Sudan, other aid workers said.

NZ pilot dies, co-pilot hurt in crash
10.05.2004
By JULIET ROWAN
A New Zealand pilot is dead and his co-pilot is in hospital after a plane crash in Sudan.
The dead pilot was David Carlyle . The co-pilot is Chris Simpson.
Six people died in Friday's crash and four survived.
The plane was flying between the towns of Jiech and Ayod and had been chartered by the Sudanese Women in Development and Peace agency.
Aircraft owner Dan Callery said the plane crashed soon after take-off when cargo moved, causing it to stall. "They were at low altitude. There was not enough time to recover."
Speaking from Nairobi, Mr Callery said the men were operating the plane on behalf of his company, Air Cush, which provided aircraft for a number of aid and non-governmental organisations.
Mr Carlyle was believed to have been working in Africa for about a year.
Mr Simpson has been transferred to a hospital in Kenya.
"He should be okay," Mr Callery said. "He's still undergoing tests."
The New Zealand Herald.
