reference checks

Does anyone have any idea how long after Qantas begins checking someones references untill they get a call up and are offered a start date?

How much weight is placed on these checks? Surely Qantas are aware that there are some very "interesting" people out there in GA who might not say good things about ex-employees.

And lastly, roughly how much notice is currently being given for a start with them?

Good news if you've got reference checks. If you're worried about what people might say about you...pick new referees!!

If you've put your old boss down and he's liable to give QF a mouthful about you:
1. it doesn't reflect well on you
2. it does't reflect well on your judgement either!

I don't think anyone knows how much emphasis is put on reference checks - it should be just a final "tick in the box". That said, if someone gives you a spray they're going to have a good think about it.

Notice seems to be anywhere between three weeks and one...or less.

I thought that giving a bad reference is illegal nowdays. All an ex employer needs to disclose is start and finish dates and nothing else.Character references are obtained from pople that one specifies.Besides, if you were working towards your licence and then resigned in order to build experience with another company the ex boss will be a bit upset dont you think.
And if a new company takes the word of and ex employer to make a judgement on ones character, than that says a lot about them.

Gday shady, i had my ref cx done and exactly one week later i got a start date. They gave me 10 days notice. I was told that they don't write you off if you get a bad one, they just dig a little deeper, get a couple more off you and check them.

Good luck

Do the reference checks normally happen before or after the security check paperwork and OPG X-ray has been sent in? Or are there no fixed rules about the order things happen in?
