Just moved here with an O/s licence and want to find out how one becomes an ATO, and if there is much work out there for them?

flametree,

You would need to have a track record or being able to produce students consistently that are up to the standard required for the licence you want to have an ATO for.

This will mean you would have been working for a flying school; you will need to have a Grade 1 instructor rating also.

ATO's are normally issued as specific to an organisation, then after years you might become an independent ATO.

The other way to becoming an ATO is to join CASA, get you delegations working for CASA and then leave.

This will change in Part 61, when introduced next year.

Lots of ATO's have military flying experience. Some I've met have worked in the bigger colleges. Hope that helps.
