Question Eastern Airlines Employment

Just a question for the Eastern flight crews out there.

I was wondering how the airline is fairing at the moment and what is happening on the recruiting front? How often are new pilots being inducted and what is the usual hours/experience? Do you need to know someone or is having your application on staffCV sufficient to get you a shot at an interview?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Great Airline to work for, or at least no complaints from me. There is a school going through at the moment not too sure of hour/experience levels of those involved but my guess would be 2000-3000+hrs. The down-training of the Bae 146 crews will slow things down for a while but I reckon anything after the first quarter of next year is 'fair game'. I don't know of too many who have got in from knowing someone but then again I haven't asked too many, so stick with pilotstaffcv.

Hang in there,mate. hoss

Sorry about the delayed reply - been away from the internet over the weekend!

Cheers!

Anyone else want to add anything?

Capt Nomad,
there are Stage 2 interviews tomorrow and in another week or so. These applicants will be those that completed stage 1 pre-Sars and have been waiting since earlier this year. Successful candidates go to the hold file, I believe.

Normally the company runs a course of 4 or more.

There is a trickle of pilots moving on to Virgin Blue, etc so recruitment is ongoing. Typically once or twice a month pre-Sars. Things are starting to ramp up again so I reckon it will be back to pre-Sars levels sometime mid next year.

Typical experience levels are as Hoss wrote: Approx 2000hrs and above, with some multi. Minimums are listed on the STAFFCV website.

Preference is given to those with turbine experience, but not having any will not exclude you from an interview.

Knowing someone will not help you apart from giving you a heads up on the company. If you are current on STAFFCV they'll eventually get to you.

Good luck.

I am encouraged by a friend who was interviewed straight off Pilot Staff. Competitive selection with most missing out, however at least they seem to have a purpose for using Pilot Staff. I do know of one Gent who got in apparently on the basis of knowing someone but is sounds like those of us registered still have a fair chance (as it should be!)

If anyone up top is listening please keep it that way

Thankyou everyone for the input - it is great to have forums like this to find out the kind of stuff that is very hard to get otherwise. I appreciate the feedback and goodluck to the rest of you!

Willie,
regardless of what you hear, the majority of candidates that miss out are culled (for want of better words) at the QF Psych & Skills (Stage 1). If you miss that, unfortunately you proceed no further.

Of those that progress to Stage 2, approx 60-80%, (depending on the day) get through the sim ride. Sometimes less, sometimes more. The remainder that are scrubbed blow the interview.

In summary, you must pass the QF Psych and Skills to get to Stage 2. (This has the largest failure rate).

You must pass both the Sim and Interview to get a guernsey. A fail in either may get you called back in a few months to repeat the part that you were weak in, if you were particularly outstanding in the part you passed.

The person you write about would still have had to successfully complete all the steps above, irrespective of how they were selected......

HJ - how long as a maximum would you expect to wait after submitting details to Staffcv ? I have been in there a fair while and was thinking no Turboprop no go ?

Eastern

Dear Mr Jarse

I completed my Stage 1 sucessfully and was called in for stage 2.

My interview, according to the nice guys in your? company was good, but the sim ride a little ordinary (dam machine acelerates too fast at inconvenient times!).

Your statement earlier in this thread appears to indicate that a failure in one of the two parts of stage two may be re-evaluated.

Should I ring your? recruitment people for another shot at the sim (I know I'll snag it this time)

signed

Hopeful!

Huge!

Not implying for a second that the said employee did not pass or deserve his position, in this case I believe quite the opposite. This particular pilot had (and probably still has) an impeccable knack for both his IFR technique and rules just to mention a few of his attributes.

my point was simply that he viewed himself as too old and unable to succeed in obtaining an airline job. It would appear that a couple of connections from his former employer simply got his resume on the higher side of the pile.

So long as this sort of thing doesn't derail the usual due process it can only be a good thing for a guy such as this as he may well have been otherwise perceived as "past it".

It does very much seem that stage 2 (skills and psychometric etc.) is the big hurdle, Huge, would you know what the typical failure rates for this are? I have heard something in the order of 50% for main line, with many being invited back for a second crack and others simply shown the door.
