Copilot Type ratings in Oz a thing of the past?

Ive heard on the rumour mill that Copilot Type Ratings in Australia will be a thing of the past soon. Is this true? Anyone care to comment?

Does anyone know how they plan to transition people who allready have them? Or will it be an amended licence?

Regards

Under the new CASR's that are replacing the CAO's and CAR's there is no such thing as a Co-pilot rating, you only have a type rating.

What will happen to all the co-pilot ratings then? are they lost entirely or are they automatically issued as a similar rating the the old command rating then?

FL CH,
Thanks thats good to know. Do you when this is going to happen.? Its a good move forward and will make Guys who go O/S more employable. Because at the moment they regard Co Pilot ratings as worthless, thye wont give you anything for them. If they were Command or like FAA Types then no problem.

And as Northern Chique said will current Co-PilotType Rating holders, be ammended to read Type Rating only? If so i can see a smalll exedus of Pilots who can go to greener pastures with a Command Rating rafther than the Later.

Very Interesting indeed

Next instrument rating renewal will be to command standard. which is not dependant on LH or RH seat. If the standard is met, a CIR will be issued.

Southern Pacific Regional Airlines (Mohawks) did the same thing 10 years ago, so too I believe did Easterns.

The question is whether or not a Co pilot aircraft endorsement will become a command or type endorsement that has validity overseas, not what happens to ones instrument rateing. Does anybody have the answer?

The aircraft that require 2 pilots will still require the 2 pilots when the new CASR's begin. Therefore if an operator wants to continue to operate after April 2005 (the date when the CASR's begin) they will need to have their co-pilots issued with type ratings. The logical way to upgrade (for those without sim's) is to do it at the IF renewal or the person base check. I know a few of the smaller regional's have already started this.

There are some big changes with the CASR's, including the requirement for all charter companies to have a C & T system and a Safety System in place. The Safety System will be checked each year and if it's not working correctly your AOC may not be renewed until the problems are fixed. I was at the RAAA meeting a few years back and one chief pilot from a medium size operation said the changes will cost them over $100,000+ for the first year.

Lightbulb

Sheep Im sure that a mate who just came back from fiji with a twotter Co-pilot endorsement was plesantly surprised at CASA KSA in Syd (who are always very helpful) when issued with a standard DHC-6 on his OZ licence with neither classification, ie did not specify Co-pilot. Think thats what he told me........hav a good 1.

To all the Co-Joe's about to upgrade, check out CAO 40.1.0, Appendix III. This is a little more than you would have done (Appendix V).
Get this check ride out of the way, your Command M/E IR, your 50 hours ICUS and you're home and hosed.

Good Luck

Currently those pilots who have a B737 second class endorsement and wish to upgrade to command endorsement, have to undergo a minimum of four hours full flight simulator training with a CASA approved organisation.
