Rental airplane for a Caribbean flight

Hi All,

Me and my brother are trying to put together a vacation which will consist of taking a SEP airplane through the Caribbean. We are both pilots and are hoping to fly from Florida and down south though the islands for two/three weeks later this spring. We are aiming to go as far south as St Lucia.

We have searched extensively for a flight club or company who provides airplanes which are insured to be operated through out the Caribbean. So far no luck, most rentals in Florida are only insured for the Bahamas.

So in short we need help to track down a rental airplane and we thought that it might be a good idea to post some questions here.

Where in Florida can we rent an airplane for a Caribbean flight?

There might be private persons in Florida how would consider to rent out their own airplane, what is the best way to get in contact with them?

Best regards

because planes can be used to transport illegal drugs or other things, you may not get what you are asking for

indeed, I would be cautious to the max.

of course I am sure you are as you represent yourself.

I did this myself when I was in college.

It's probably changed a lot since then but I rented a C172 from a local flight school in FL and flew out to the islands with about a hundred hours and no instrument rating...stupid in hindsight but I was 19 and invincible.

The one smart thing I did was to fly in a group with friends in other planes...was a blast to fly a loose formation out there and we were able to offer mutual support and put our heads together for navigation and communication which came in especially useful when dealing with the surprise line of thunderstorms and a radio failure (in my plane) on the way back.

You should do this and have fun but take advantage of modern equipment...Internet radar, GPS, iPads, satellite phone, etc.

As far as rentals...check around, the rental place will help you with everything you need to know if they've done this before. St. Lucia is a long way for a SE so you better get a decent rental with low time. You will need a life raft.

With proper planning and care it can be done safely.

I would imagine the DA-42 rents for approximately 18 trillion bucks a minute.

I would rent the plane in San Juan and from there fly down the Lesser Antilles.
The rental rate there is higher but you save a long stretch over water.
