Internships in the US

Hey folks,

Can anyone help me with the graduate employment market in the US? Specifically regarding the aviation industry of course, I've graduated in the UK where there appears to be little or no opportunity for language/business/HR graduates which is why I'm weighing up my options in the US.

To elaborate on my situation further, I'm a British national. My University degree covers EU law, business and politics. I also speak two languages, but the majority of my family are employed in the industry, my father as a senior Captain with AZ. I previously worked with a large flying school to gain as much experience on the commercial/customer service side as possible.

As you can see, I'm thin on the ground at the moment, on the bottom rung of the ladder.

I'm planning to spend a month or so in New England during August to gauge the general mood of graduate success on the commercial side of airlines, but I'm not holding out much hope. Is anyone aware of internship or training opportunities (strictly commercial, non-airside) with major American carriers?

BA have understandably shut down their graduate schemes for the considerable future and the low-cost carriers aren't interested. Any further advice would be greatly appreciated.

Usually internships with airlines in the US can only be obtained if you are currently enrolled as a student (grad or undergrad) in a University. The only one that I have seen so far was with Southwest Airlines and it was for the business guys oppossed to flight or ops. I get alot of info still from the university I attended, but like i said. If you are not enrolled at any school, you are not eligible. AND most tend to be un-paid but you get flight benefits or other rewards of sort. My best advice is to research all the airlines you want to work for and check their website. Companies like FedEx and UPS have 1 year co-ops thats typically the longest...unless they offer you a job. but ill say it again, havent seen any that will take graduates. If you're looking to be a pilot for a major here in the US there are no "sponsorships" or things of that sort where you can slide in with no experience and fly jets like in other countries...

Figured i'd try to help...good luck

J1 practical training/internship can be kickstarted (think the application, not entry to US soil) within 12 months of graduation, not just during studies, so depends on company that'd be willing to sponsor the visa and offer internship/placement.
More details on peculiarities on USCIS website.
They can also be tailored to one's availability/needs up to 18 months max.
The UK side of paperwork usually does/has to involve agency like USIT or other exchange agency that does the paperwork, but it should be doable with correct paperwork from US company, then doing visa interview with DS form at US embassy/consulate. No idea about changing status when in the US, regarding this paperwork.
