Virgin America info

Want to work for a new carrier using A320's. Using a California State grant to train pilots to start at $41 flt hr and topping out at $126 for a senior Capt. Then give Carmela a call @650 762 7151 and let her know that your ready to move into the big leagues and ahhh...don't expect her pick up the airfare, hotel, meals, or even cab fare. Though she really feels bad that she can't help you with it. And hey...you know that training bond thing...don't sweat it man. It will be paid off before you die, your family won't have to pick it up. Unless the stress of working 23 twelve hour days a month, wondering if the next pay check will pay the basic bills, the increasing cost of your family's health insurance is more than Richie Rich pays you each month starts to eat at you. But thats no sweat man, because you know you made the big times and twelve years from now when you are raking in the dough at $126 an hour your going to be on easy street. Makes you want to call up Richie and offer to shine his shoes, doesn't it. Or at least mow his lawn.

Check out thier web site for a list of the World's most experienced failures in the Airline business. And hey...tell em I said hello.

Any bets as to whether or not they will even be granted an operating certificate? Lots of opposition from US airlines, some politicos, and ALPA. Will Branson be able to pull it off? How many pilots want to be domiciled in one of the most expensive places in the world?

Virgin America

I got the call from Virgin America for an interview.

A little research on the website shows a very impressive management team and good financial backing.

I work for one of the US majors on the A320 and have considerable time in the aircraft. Who knows when I will upgrade. I have an opportunity to get in on the ground floor, if I am offered employment with Virgin.

What would you do in this case? Would you take the job?

Virgin a joke

Airline 101

The airline business is a labor intensive one. It takes an army of laborers to keep an airline flying day after day, year after year. There is no getting around this fact. To be a success in the airline business an airline must be led by a management team who’s primary goal is to make that airline a success. If airline employees can look to their
management team and know that team is working to make their airline a successful one they will be motivated to do whatever they can to make that happen.

So this begs the question...Why did the folks at Virgin America appoint Don Carty as Chairman of the Board?

What an error in judgment they've made by smearing the Virgin brand in the scandal-ridden reputation of Donald J. Carty.

Remember what Don Carty did to the employees of AMR a few years back (Feb. 2003)?

Former AMR CEO Don Carty revealed the details of executive-retention bonuses and pension protections just three days after most employee groups had narrowly voted to accept $1.62 billion worth of annual concessions. This after Carty made numerous pleas to his employee groups calling for "shared sacrifice".

Oh wait!!! Didn't current Virgin America CEO Fred Reid take part in a bonus plan at Delta? At Delta it was also called a "retention bonus"? Fred left Delta months after receiving the bonus! SOME RETENTION!

That's the reason Virgin America CEO Fred Reid had NO problem hiring Don Carty even though Carty was forced to resign (read FIRED) by AMR’s board for incompetence and arrogance. Fred Reid it seems shares some of the same career experiences and management-styles as Don Carty.

Here's the big problem with Virgin America...it's run by folks who have a track record of lying to then screwing over the very employee groups they've been charged with leading.

What was Richard Branson thinking hiring these two Bozos???

Would I take the job? No!

We eat our young in this industry. $126/hr for the left seat, you have to be kidding me. You might up grade faster but take a look at the working conditions (if they have them in print) and I bet you will be surprised by how bad they will be. Add to that the risk of the company not making it (Airtran, and Jetblue just lost money this last quarter while UA, NW and AA made money so far) and it looks like an easy decision. Not to mention you prostituting yourself just to get the chance to get to the left seat sooner erodes the pay and working conditions for the rest of us.

We have all taken it in the shorts if you work for a US major but on the bright side we have leveled the cost playing field and the low-cost carriers are not the low-cost carriers anymore. Instead of jumping ship you should root on the pilots at SWA and AA as they negotiate their contracts and hope they raise the pay and benefit bar a notch or two.

I work for a carrier in BK and I make just under Virgin captain pay as a wide-body copilot. Factor in our work rules, retirement (I think we still call it that) and I bet I am way ahead.
