Pan Am shutting down AGAIN!

PORTSMOUTH — Will Pan Am be resuming flights at Pease Airport?

The Pan Am Clipper Connection announced in August that it would suspend flights from September through November 17; now reports from other areas serviced by the discount airline suggest flights may not resume at all.

According to the Times Herald-Record of Middletown, N.Y., Pan Am told Stewart International Airport in New Windsor, N.Y. that it would not reinstate service as promised in November. The Herald-Record reported that Alex Mouzas, Pan Am spokesman, said service will also be cut at the Portsmouth airport.

However, the Poughkeepsie Journal reported that Mouzas said Portsmouth is one of Pan Am's most lucrative markets and service would not be stopped here, but instead would become a focus of the company. Mouzas could not be reached for comment this morning.

Rob Culliford, a member of the Pan Am General Council, said this morning that he was fairly sure Pan Am flights would resume in the Port City next month.

Pease Development Authority Deputy Director Dave Mullen said the PDA received correspondence yesterday from Pan Am, but he was unsure of the details at this time.

"We got notice yesterday that they may not be continuing in the plans that they had previously mentioned," he said.

Upon the original suspension of flights during the slow, pre-holiday season for airlines, Pan Am blamed soaring fuel costs. The company continued to sell tickets and promised to resume flights in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The airline, parented by Boston-Maine Airways, has applied in recent months for permission to add planes to its fleet. The company ran into trouble and became the subject of a federal investigation by the Department of Transportation when it was found financial documents submitted with that application were falsified by former general council John Nadolny. Nadolny resigned in June.

The delay in adding new planes has cost the company more than $1 million and caused it to lay off dozens of employees, according to a letter the Times Herald-Record reported Pan Am filed yesterday with the Department of Transportation. That letter said the airline is "at the very brink of its ability to survive," according to the paper.

A Pan Am competitor, discount airline Allegiant Air, will begin offering nonstop flights between Pease and Orlando, Fla. beginning Oct. 20.
