SAS

Anyone able to offer any information on being a pilot in SAS in Norway?
Day to day life, hours, pay, career progress to long-haul and general wellbeing in the company.

You'll be hired on short haul. Progression to long haul is based on seniority, so depends on the bidding of your colleagues ahead of you on the seniority list. The future of pure long haul flying is uncertain, the company is in the process of introducing mixed fleet flying - short/long haul combined.

SAS is spending too much money on positioning LH-crews from Oslo to Copenhagen. Just a short delay on the positioning flight or the flight to US means that you will run out of duty time if flying to Chicago, and therefore a diversion to eg. New York is required. One of the things SAS had to fight over the years with the pilot unions, but now it is over.

Another thing, is that SAS can optimise the duty time. For a long haul pilot flying 900 block hours pr year, which is maximum only gives around 1200 duty hours, which is far from the maximum 1920 hours/year.

Does anyone here roughly know how long I could expect for a base in Trondheim ? I know it’s seniority based , but are we talking months , years or decades?

Also in regards to pay I’ve seen quotes ranging from 450 000 kr all the way up to 650 000 kr which is obviously quite the difference and would significantly impact the possibility of commuting from Trondheim to Oslo so just looking for a ballpark figure.

And is it true that you can only apply once ?

Yup, SAS has a policy of only assessing candidates once. One strike and you´re out.....

Not entirely correct. I was assessed twice, back around 1997-98. Failed the first one, possibly because I was particularly enthusiastic, and passed the second one, about a year later. However, the story was always like you said, only one shot. Just want to share the fact, that there are exemptions.. Fact.
