Baby 8-4.

In the US, everything you really need is cheaper than in Europe;
1. we all need a car and fuel for it.
2. food to eat.
3. somewhere to live.
All these things are much cheaper "over there" and to add to insult, they make more money, pay less tax.....
I don't live there yet but I certainly don't live and pay taxes in Scandinavia anymore. It's crazy and it is hard to see it when you live there.
I'm already out of there!!!!

Oh, hang on a second guys:
It is not all that rosy in the US.
Yes, if ya get a flying job with a major airline, it is nice, then some.
If ya however get stuck with commuters, ya are a lot better off in Scandicountries:
Have friends with Widerøes and SAS commuter
making about $100,000 per yer. Ya will never see that in the US on a Dash-8 or F-50.
8 years with American Eagle or Horizon Air,
(ATR-42/72 or Dash-8/F-100 will bring in $45 to $50,000 with top pay about $60,000 to $70,000 after 20 years.
In the meantime ya fly a lot for **** wages and you're always complaining.
(Been there, done that: Did fly skipper for Eastern Metro Express some years ago on the Twin Otter, making $20.00 per hour, 80 hour guarantee. The co-pilots made half of that, starving wages for sure.)
If ya get on with a freigth carrier like Atlas Air, expect to top out at $80,000 after
5 years, despite big planes and long routes.
Same with World Airways and such operators.
(Many Norwegians working for DHL, high pay after 12 years is about $140,000,not shabby)
My point is: Very high competition for the good jobs in the US: UPS, FED-EX, UAL, AAL,
NWA, DAL, don't expect to walk into one of those classes: It took me 22 years of flying and lots of hard work to finally get on with AA.
No shoprtage of pilots in the US. None.
If some of ya are thinking about making the move, e-mail me at [email protected].
Will be happy to give advise or answer questions.

TowerDog,
Have sent you email regarding crewing for your sun seeking boat trip.
To the rest of you:
If money is everything, then by all means evacuate scandinavia at your earlies inconvenience. However, in my book money is not the sole motivator. Had that been the case, I would have been in either IT or gunning for a flying job. But I put more emphasis on things like friends and family, a regular schedule and above all sleeping in my own bed (preferably with a blond). And even if the danish society stinks in many a way, I still would not like to live many other places. Everytime I've been in far away places, USA or Far East for example, it strikes me just how lucky I am to be born in Denmark, even with all the crap and BS our politicians come up with. No, Denmark is by no means a perfect society, especially if you earn a good salery. And again, I do not carry home the paychecks earned by most pilots, so do not pay the same obscene amount of tax (but it's bad enough as it is)
Would I ever relocate ? Maybe, if the right job in the right spot came my way. But I do not see myself living outside Europe under any circumstances.
But that's just me, other people have other priorities.
With that said, I wish you all a happy 2001 !

TowerDog,
A lot of truth in what you are saying but the salaries you are quoting at SAS Commuter for instance (you mentioned $100.000) that is for sure before taxes. After those taxes your take home pay will look less impressive, believe me and that is what this thread is all about.
I do agree though that unless you end up in a few major airlines in the States, Scandinavia is not too bad but only if you end up in a few stable companies. Otherwise, don't count on having a job a year from now......

Yup, the salaries with SAS Commuter are indeed before taxes.
And similar flying jobs in the US is half the income, BUT with less taxes, yes agreed.
At that level however, I do belive the boys in Scandinavia have the better deal:
If you have children in the US, you will most likely send 'em to private school. That is about a thousand a month, per head.
Later in life they go to good colleges, uh, 20 to 30 thousand dollars per year.
No problem for a Delta captain making 200 K per year and playing golf 20 days a month.
For a hard working commuter dude however, it is brutal.
Therefore the rush to make more money in the US: Move to better neigborhoods, bigger homes, safer cars, more vacations, etc., etc.
Quality of life however:
Uh, I was happy being poor and dropping meat-bombs in Norway. (Parachute jumpers)
Good food, good friends, hot girls, good everything except the darn climate and them high taxes.
Now on the other side of the coin: Living in the US, have had some really good pay-checks over the years, and I was lucky and got into big planes.
Had I however stayed in the turbo-props,
(And many guys do for various reasons)
I would rather be in Norway flying them DHC-8s or the F-50s.
Some of my buddies do and they are happy and content.
Not so for many of the commuter guys in this country, they are always drooling over the next "maybe" big time job, and/or they are behind on those monthly bills.
If you are young and single, yup, come over here, ya can make it or break it.
And always go back home much richer in experience.
(You will however get restless in the old country after having been here working and living.)
Easier living and easier happines.
Don't know the answer, but if life is good, don't change anything: It won't get better despite the promising TV commercials on this side of the pond.

TowerDog,
I get the feeling we agree on this subject, just looking at it from different sides.
Just remember though, SAS Commuter is one of those jobs where you got it made, the Delta of Scandinavia if you will, turboprop or not. Maybe the reason why people are more content with their jobs in vikingland is because there are so few alternatives. No majors hiring hundreds every year so you are pretty much limited to what you got. Or is it just that we are less prone to get into this dog-eat-dog mentality than the yanks?
In any case, I agree with you that it is a more relaxed work atmosphere here in Europe and that is very important. Myself, I headed south and are now enjoying much lower taxes than before, better and cheaper health care and much more in my pocket every month. I just don't think we get as much for all the taxes we pay as we use to (did we ever get a lot??)

Scandinavian: WELL DONE....!!!!!
