Right now, Qatar wouldn't be the worst of places if I got a rating to go there....

Minimumstick, you are wrong. The individual is EXACTLY who is to blame. Someone was the first to offer to pay for the rating and once the companies realized that some individuals were willing to pay for their training it was all over.

It only takes one to spoil the fun for all.

Well maybe it was these persons' faults that it all started if you are to portray it in such a simple manner - I do understand your way of thinking. But now that this has become common there is nothing one person can do to change it. It won't make it any better if one person shares your way of thinking and decides not to pay for his type rating himself, but instead stay without a job for example. Someone else will just take his opportunity to pay for the type rating and work for the company instead... My point is that people have to come together to make a difference, through unions for example. We have to stand together and it has to be done in an organized way.

Then you could probably argue that the individual has a responsibility because he is a contributor to the fact that he is making the market worse. In a sense this is correct, but you can't expect him to sit on his ass and let a career opportunity which is the dream of his life pass by just because the world would be a better place for pilots if every other pilot in the world did the same. Because every pilot in the world will not, and one pilot's effort will be in vain.

I agree it is unfortunate, and I wish it was different, but the way the pilot job market is today we all have to handle our own to succeed. It is not in the human mind to sacrifice your career opportunity for the common good just so that some other idiot who is opposing what you try to achieve takes it instead.

I guess we all can agree to disagree.
I do think it`s wrong to pay for your training on a type to be eligible to work for a company.
Crossunder has a different view and is not ashamed of that.
The world has become like the americans say "looking out for number one"
ie: yourself, yourself, yourself. at any cost. No looking back, take no prisoners.

Funny Crossunder mentioned moving around the world to get a job.
I did that, got a lot of valuable life and job experience, the family had a blast.
Much more so than telling the missus that I had a fun time on the tarmac in Malaga for 25 min. today at work.

You should try, it might even be good for you.

Different lives, different perspectives.

Prostitution is the world`s oldest line of work. And it`s still going strong.

They say "jump" and you say "how high?"

They say "bend over" you say "how much?"

In Aug 2005 Dusthog started a thread with the following tiltle:
Sim partner for MD80-rating"Looking for someone to do the MD80-typerating with.
Prefer SAS FA in Stockholm.
I'm interest in the course for pilots with 1000hrs or more."

Catans;
You had the first reply to this thread which was :
"What is the cost for the typerating?"

So, why this question? why not shoot him down straight away?. Or did you actually consider paying for a rating

In april 2005 there was a thread about Sterling wanted to fly low cost to the US where you Catans sounded quite enthusiastic about their ideas since you would save money compared to travelling with SAS. Now, didn't Sterling be one of the companies requiering new pilots to pay their own rating? Not just that, but also through their own TRTO for a "special price"

......I know I would fly to the States for a cheap penny and I know many with me that would.

I wish them all the luck.

Catans
and,

....I did mean that if I could travel to the US in a cheaper way than by going with SAS, I would, I would and I think many more would as well.

I do wish Sterling the best in their endevours.

Catans
Why wish them all the best with your attitude? Are you wishing Ryanair all the best as well since they are supposed to be cheap?

But of course, we can't blame the companies
