Nick keep thinking about that one. Dont think you have understood it yet. If the price for working on a day off is nothing, then NOBODY would do it. Hence even the company would not find it a good idea because they loose flexibilty and it is much cheaper paying a pilot who is already employed than getting a contractor to do it.
Benefit for the pilots. More pilots need to be hired and hence you would have more people behind you on the senority list.

I'm quite confident he's thought about it. Not too sure about you, though. His point was that no employer will agree to set the price to nothing, because obviously to all - and as you've for some reason needed to spell out - nobody's gonna fu(king bother...
Pilots don't set their own wages, regardless if their aim is higher or lower than the going rate. They try to negotiate - with various success. And no employer is dumb enough to agree to '0'.

Which, in fact, is a way of saying that you get what you pay for
Wages, and in general benefits, should reflect how loyal one can expect an employee to act. I.e. if the pay is 0, then a paycheck of 1 is better. And a paycheck of 2 is twice of 1 and so on... Small figures of course, but still valid.
