ATC job in Norway
Hello everybody,
I have couple of simple questions for people who are more familiar with Norwegian ATC.
I am 22 years old and just finish my TWR training in England, right now I am in the process of obtaining my OJT and getting my licence. I am doing this in a country in Eastern Europe.
I am considering if possible to continue my carrer in Norway. I got in touch couple of months ago with a person from the Norwegian ANS who told me that the best would be to contact them after I get my European TWR licence.
I was wondering if somebody knew more about the situation in Norway, are new controllers welcome, do they need to know the domestic language, is it enough that I will have only the TWR rating (with a wish to get my radar APP very soon)...
Thank you for your answers.
A.

Don`t know, but if you contact Avinor or search www.avinor.no you`ll be looking in the right direction. From what I understand there is a shortage of ATC personnel, has been for some years now, and will still be short for awhile because during the former regime Avinor decided costcutting was equal to a stop in education of new ATCers and some furloughs. So nowadays everybody is trying to catch up but it`s taking veeeeery long to get things back on track. AFIS, though probably not what you`re looking for, is in lack of personnel. One only has to look at the NOTAMs to find "AFIS closed between so-and-so due to lack of personnel"

What the other poster said; you need to speak Scandinavian to work here.
My knowledge is quite limited considering this issue, but I think the only "foreigners" working as ATCOs in Norway at the present are 5-10 Swedes.
Cheers.

One icelandic and at least one dane also work in Norway.
..and I still think you need to speak norwegian to become an ATCO in Norway according to BSL G 5.1:
(1) Luft-bakke-samband skal normalt foregå på norsk eller engelsk. Det første anrop fra fartøysjefen er bestemmende for hvilket av disse språk som skal benyttes i luft-bakke-sambandet. Imidlertid kan fartøysjefen eller vedkommende luftfartsstasjon på et senere tidspunkt foreslå overgang fra bruk av engelsk til norsk eller omvendt dersom dette synes hensiktsmessig.

Avinor, previously known as Luftfartsverket, owns and operates pretty much all airports in Norway. Therefore you should look at www.avinor.no for requirements for ATC education and send them an application. If you`re called in there are some tests you need to pass, but the folks are really pleasant.
Foreigners in Norwegian ATC.... I can think of 1 at Bodø Control who is either of Spanish or Portugese origin (guesstimating from what I`ve heard inflight anyway...). As English is the primary language then it isn`t really an issue if your Norwegian isn`t up to speed. It will be after awhile anyway.

Hi, I work at Bodø ATCC. You will need to refresh your norwegian . In a TWR environment most of the communication with cars and coordination between units is in norwegian and as I quoted earlier the pilot choses the language on initial call (99,5% is english though). 2 weeks ago I was censor in RTF for a guy who chose norwegian (and 23 who got a english certificate) for his "mikroplane"(?) certificate, so you must be ready for that one. I'm sure you'll learn norwegian fast since you once knew it , but be sure that you are close to fluent prior to the interview since you will only get one try with Avinor.
During your education Avinor will decide if your going to a TWR, APP or ACC, Its not like in the states where your work your way up to ACC
Everything you need to know should be on this link (in norwegian );
Flygelederutdanning - Avinor.no
They require you to speak fluent norwegian, alternatively danish or swedish. Some of the regulations are still in norwegian only.
I dont know who that might be , maybe Islandic?
