Only GA Airport in Finland to be destroyed!!!

Helsinki city council and their "Co-criminals" are doing their best to destroy a historically significant airport of Malmi (EFHF). Have a look at the Wikipedia article, both links in Swedish and English
http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helsing...alms_flygplats

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helsinki-Malmi_Airport

Malmi is very similar to Bromma as it located very close to the centre of Helsinki and could be developed in same ways. Instead the plan is to move it's present day funcions in the middle of nowhere.

The whole story of Malmi airport here and a petition http://www.pelastamalmi.org/en/index.html

Here is a link to the page where the you can give an input to the government in Finland and read about the whats' and why's http://www.toinenlentokentta.info/svenska/index.html

Please give us a hand and spread the info on your local websites and BB's and please sign the petitions on behalf of Malmi airport. This is a worrying trend around the world where city councils using pitiful excuses and to advance their own interests close airports and drive general aviation deeper into the abyss making it ever more expensive.

Honestly, by just looking the map it would seem that the new areas planned for the airport would probably serve the new airport activities/future plans much better than the old area. Currently there is no room for anykind of expansion. Nobody wants to destroy GA-airport activities from the area. Thats not what its all about. Nobody from the active users really cares about Malmis history-come on guys you know that..
The area needs land to build houses etc, there is no argument in that. So why to save a relic which is actually almost 100% used in training student, than the same job could be done about 30 minutes away drivingwise in a much better area. If that would be in the middle of nowhere, well buddy you need to go outside of Kehä 3 occasionally. Just a thought...

Malmi

I DO live outside Ringroad III Kehä 3, to the west of it and Sipoo would be a 30 min increase for me, even if I took the road Kehä 3 all the way to the Eastern end. However increase in driving time and distance would be a minor nuisance for compared with the loss of the historically significant and functional existing airport. Let alone the huge cost of building a new one.

Thank you for the comments though.

One thing Finland is not short of is space for building. I don't get why they don't just build houses where the new airport is planned???? Surely this would be the most cost effective option. Malmi serves Helsinki very well as both a GA airport and an historical treasure.

Malmi proposed destruction

JJflyer Et Al, I signed the petition on your post because I believe that this airport is of great historical value. I worked out of Helsinki a few years ago and one of the things that really impressed me about the Finnish culture was the very strong sense of national identy and tradition. It would be a great pity if some land grabber removed this national asset from the map. That is very much the case in the UK and it is not good, I hope that the speculators get booted out.
I would love to return to Helsinki to work (7000+ hrs, Finnish wife, etc.) but not easy to find job, still struggling with the language.
Best of luck with petition I only hope it does not fall on silver lined ears.

152wiseguy - Finland is not short of space for new buildings, but Helsinki is... more space for people, more tax income, more money. I guess economic growth is more important than history.
