PPL in Norway
Hi,
I am a UK citizen, now leaving in Norway. I started my PPL a few months ago (onyl clocking up a few hours), and want to continue to study for it, while leaving here for the next two years or so. However, as suspected this is not that straightforward, having contacted both the Norwegian CAA and the UK CAA, it seems that i must complete the exams in Norwegian - currently this extends to about 3 or 4 words!!! I have made a formal approach to the Norwegain CAA to do the practical course in Norway and the exams in the UK, but they are not too keen. They maybe translating the exams for me - but i`m not counting my chickens yet!
So...
I`m now in the throws of looking to do a PPL course eslewhere, namely South Africa - just checking the Norwegian CAA if i can fly on a Non-JAA state license - we`ll see!
Just wondering if anyone out there has had a similar experience??
btw - in Norway you have to sit all exams before going solo!
Cheers

You could do your PPL at a foreign FTO that is approved by the UK CAA. There are none of those in South Africa but you could find one in Florida or OZ. You would get a JAA PPL issued by the UK CAA which is as good as a Norwegian issued licence in Norway or any other JAA member state.

Thanks,
This seems the best bet! I am thinking of doing some hours at my Norwegian school (upto 20 before first solo in Norway), and then finishing the PPL in the US, at an approved JAA school.
Thanks again for the info

Seagull, would you mind posting the name+phone of your flying school in Norway (well, yours or of any other that you know).
At the present moment I am hunting around for a place to do my PPL(A). I am in the unusual situation of not being geographically bound to any one place, but I would prefer to do it in or near Europe, and Norway is one place that I like, even if expensive, any excuse for going there is good
Please also keep us posted about what the CAA / Norway say re. your doing the theory in the UK and your flying in Norway (I'm studying as per the CAA syllabus at the moment).
Thanks.

Hi,
After must wrangling with the Norwegian CAA i`ve decided to do my JAA PPL in the US and have booked to go to Anglo American in September. I am however planning on taking some flights before then at Sola FlyKlubb near Stavanger. They have a website in Norwegian and a forum too.
Cheers

Seagull, thanks for the info. Out of curiousity, what is it about the Norwegian CAA that put you off?
And another question, looks like I'll be going the same route of doing my JAA-PPL in the States, however, I would like to clock up some flying hours before I go, and I'll be in Norway next month. Could you advise me how to go about getting some flying hours before doing my theory exams?
And btw, have you come across these guys' website? Appears like you do your whole PPL in English. I am going to phone them now and ask in what language are the exams. Will keep posted.

Hi,
How did you get on with speaking to those guys? Their website looks good and i`d wished i`d heard about them before - as it would`ve saved me some hassle.
The Norwegian CAA still stipulated that i must take the exams in english - so i guess these guys just translate them?
Let me know how you got on. I should be starting lessons after Easter here to get familiar with what i`m going to be doing in the states in Sept!
Cheers
