Scandinavian pilots working abroad
I’ve just moved to Sweden from Canada and currently converting my Canadian licence to the JAA. I understand the job market for pilots in Sweden isn’t the greatest currently. I was wondering if there are any Swedish pilots, or Scandinavian for that matter, that work in the UK or abroad and still live in Sweden. i.e. is it possible to for say Ryan air and still live in Stockholm. Any advice you could give me would be much appreciated.

Hi there,
I am a Swedish pilot that gave up on the Swedish aviation market and am now happliy employed in the UK. I still live in Sweden and commute weekly between the countries. I have done this for about a year and it has worked quite wel. If you are working for a company that provides a stabile roster then you should have no problem.
During the winter months this year I have been sent on an extended detachment to Canada for four months, unfortunately only with one trip home during the period, but I have only positive thinhs to say about it.

Just a word of warning. Before you give out some sensitive information make sure that you do not give it someone like a journo or tax office...

Hopeful Pilot
Im considering to convert my (future ) FAA lisences in Sweden, beacause its so damn expensive and difficult here in Finland.
-Where are you converting? What schoold what price? How long does it take?
Is it generally cheap to convert in Sweden?
-What about accomodation food etc?
-Can I fly with a Swedish JAA licence in Finland? Im just asking because apparently im not allowed to fly with a British JAA lisence here. (btw whats the point of JAA, if you cant fly with a British CAA lisence here?

UK JAA licence should be good in any JAA country, as is Finnish or Swedish issued JAA licence. Must be some misunderstanding or confusion between UK CAA and JAA licences.

Florida, Naples Air Center, is probably the cheapest for the JAA ground school and commercial conversion. I'm hear Spain is probably the next cheapest place. As for not being able to fly in Finland on a UK issued JAA license

It means exactly what is printed. Be careful when passing any info when working in one and living in the other country.
Maybe Kimbo had misunderstanding in Finland about UK CAA issued national and JAA licences. JAA licence is OK, national no.

With what you are saying I am left to assume a lot. Maybe you are referring to immigration matters, perhaps taxes, or possibly licence requirements. I'm sure the point you are making is a worthwhile one, though the brief point you've made leaves much to the reader to guess. If you've had or heard of some difficulties of cross-boarder working, i.e. specifics, I’d honestly like to hear it.

Income tax is always a big issue. Both countries usually think that they are entitle for full amounts. Next is your social security, one may end up in the situation where he/she is totally uncovered. Went through these personally. Less you tell them better off you are....

For your info, I've been flying in Finland on my British issued CPL for two years now. I even did an IR here and got it issued in the UK. Both Finland and the UK seem to comply not only with the JARs but also with the spirit of the JARs.

Thanks for that last reply, I have been apparently mistaken about this matter.
Are there any good flight schools in England where I could convert FAA-JAA? What about prices? Is it easier there?
