If his aircraft has a problem that requires a diversion, he might find himself on the way to The Hague.

Or some Iranian Buk operator might have an itchy trigger finger:E

They could refuse permission for him to land, a couple of trucks on the runway would do it, he then becomes someone else’s problem ;)

Hahaha, Belgorod is a cunning trap according to Russia.

I think that's one of the helicopters that went down a few days ago, not a new crash.

The great big Russian limousine that must way a ton weight didn’t come off well against a Volvo that looks drivable.

I've heard the same from other analysts. Described as less significant than say Soledar was, for example.
But, in a war, how often do you have the luxury of knowing exactly where the enemy will attack and that this enemy won't be able to abandon the objective? One should milk it for all its worth. Of strategic importance was destroying the horde of 40k armed - such as they were - convicts, and this had to be faced somewhere. The professionalism of russian army regulars can be bad enough, already.
Meanwhile, to the imperial russia sympathizers and its apologists on this forum: enjoy your newly "liberated" 41.6 km^2 of scorched rubble. For a time, at least.

I think they have just about guaranteed that happening along with joining the EU, far from trying to wreck it, they have bolstered the process and more or less guaranteed the inclusion of both Sweden and Finland into NATO as well.
Far from wanting to weaken NATO, your country has done more than anyone in the last 50 years to bring NATO together, strengthen it and increase spending on both growth and weaponry. So thank you, your country has put NATO on a stronger footing than it ever was and ensured our safety through a combined and stronger self defence partnership..

I don't disagree. All good outcomes and off-ramps have been crossed out at this point. I think Russia sees the inevitability of Ukrainian membership, and that is the primary driver of their fighting now. They may hold some hope that the 2024 election will allow a change in the U.S. approach to the war, but certainly can't count on that. So Russia feels they need a good chunk of eastern Ukraine for 1. Additional defensible space (NATO expansion to the current eastern border of Ukraine is much too close for comfort) and 2. To maintain a good grip on Crimea (control of the Black Sea is an existential necessity for Russia). Right now I can't see them giving up on redrawing the border (whether the international community acknowledges the new border or not). We can ramp things up to crush Russia conventionally any minute we want to. But the "prize" we will win for doing so is nuclear conflict, which is being treated by some with a glib, "bring it on" attitude.

Everyone can argue till the cows come home about what's "right" and what's "wrong," but since such labels fail to control what happens, it's largely a waste of time.

Is there any consensus on what's going on in Belgorod? Is it:
A. What they say at face value (that would be a first!)
B. They are genuine pro-Ukraine/anti-Putin Russians (an attempted uprising)
C. They are local Ukrainians posing as anti-Putin Russians (to destabilise Russia by instigating belief that an attempted uprising exists)
D. They are Pro-Putin Russians posing as Ukrainians posing as anti-Putin Russians (a false flag attempt to claim Ukraine is covertly invading Russia)
E, F, G etc? The possibilities seem endless.
