Boris flies in Typhoon

The question is... why? he had already got his marching orders, so does he now see the RAF as his plaything before he is gone? I know training has to be maintained etc, but this just seems bad timing as the rest of the UK is tightening its belt. BTW, I thought they had binned all the two seaters?

Tabloid headlines must be "Buffoon in a Typhoon"

andytug 18th Jul 2022 13:49

More to the point, how did he pass the medical, and where did they get a g suit to fit him? Or did he get a pass as PM and they just trundled him around a bit?

OvertHawk 18th Jul 2022 15:11

This must have been on the cards for a wee while I imagine - That's not the kind of thing that get's pulled together at a couple of weeks notice.

jolihokistix 18th Jul 2022 15:52

Don’t forget he still has cachet in the larger world.

Don't they use a clear visor in Tiffies then?

57mm 18th Jul 2022 17:45

More to the point, how was he allowed to experience AAR as a pax?

vascodegama 18th Jul 2022 18:11

He is not the first.

Bksmithca 18th Jul 2022 18:16

Watching the video i know there are dual seat Typhoons but why does it look like he's in the front seat.

GlobalNav 18th Jul 2022 18:35

Poor guy, too late for Top Gun II

As was briefed to myself three times I flew as Cat B pax in ejection seat fitted aircraft. Clear visor down at all times. However we know taking in information and application of it is not someone's strong point.

deltahotel 18th Jul 2022 22:02

No gloves either

frank2302 18th Jul 2022 22:14

Clear & gloves?!

Surely for canopy manipulation & det cord & bird stike & cockpit fire & command ejection & all other possibilities, visor & gloves are mandatory, or is arrogance & over-assuredness in passengers now tolerated?

ACW599 18th Jul 2022 22:20

How do we know it wasn't a sim ride?

From the pictures…

ChrisVJ 18th Jul 2022 23:08

To tell the truth, If I became PM a Typhoon ride would be the first thing I organised, not the last!

Steve Bond 19th Jul 2022 08:13

The first batch of 16 T.1 two-seaters were binned, but six T.3s were added later and remain in service.

Was it target towing ?

All of a parcel, with ignoring briefs, (the written and spoken versions !), 'rules are for proles' attitude and a teenager's intolerance of other peoples' knowledge. The wonder of it (and the pity) is that such an entrenched attitude has not brought about its natural conclusion - so far !

Fonsini 19th Jul 2022 10:15

294 pounds weight limit for the Mk16A - must have been awfully close with flight kit.

Indeed. Bet he took off with them on. Incapable of operating his go pro with them on I wager.

Maybe that's why he left the gloves off! ;)

No, BuffHoon was not allowed to fly FJ because of a medical issue!

Ewan Whosearmy 19th Jul 2022 11:14

Some here may have forgotten how overwhelming a FJ ride can be for an inexperienced pax. It's perfectly understandable that he forgot to lower his visor.

papa_sierra 19th Jul 2022 11:27

With a lowered vizor nobody would know it was the 'Convict' (Thanks to the Guardian's John Crace for the epitaph).

His flight suit did look a little snug....

bristolflyer 19th Jul 2022 12:55

Couldn't the pilot "accidentally" eject him?

Megaton 20th Jul 2022 07:09

Incorrect. Geoff Hoon flew in the back of a Hawk in about 2004.

Legalapproach 20th Jul 2022 11:49

Any idea which callsign they operated under?

I understand that there might be some appropriate callsigns operating out of Conningsby and I hope someone in Ops employed their sense of humour

3(F) use Chaos, Rampage and Nightmare amongst others

11(F) use Havoc and Tyrant

12 use Vandal, Vermin and Deadpool

Can't wait to read all the acidic comments about Sunak/Truss/Starmer when their turn comes.

"However, this time, due to the “informal” setting of the flight, the usual protocol was not respected. Instead, the passenger was examined by a doctor four hours before the flight. He was declared apt to participate in the flight, under the condition that he would not be submitted to a negative load factor. That information was not communicated to the pilot.

The civilian was already nervous when he entered the cockpit, with his heart rate recorded between 136 and 142 beats per minute. The investigation found that the safety checks of the passenger had been approximate at best. He carried out most of his installation into the cockpit by himself. As a consequence, his visor was up, his anti-g pants were not worn properly, his helmet and oxygen mask were both unattached, and his seat straps were not tight enough."
