If you read the last 5 paragraphs in the linked article - it’s the latter.

I got that impression, and it puzzled me.
Al Qaeda wasn't, for quite some time, beheld in a good light in Iran. I guess things change.

Really important story. It is not just that UK special forces have been given veto power over resettlement of former Afghan SF colleagues. It’s that this is a stark conflict of interest, given long overdue investigations into UK SF wrongdoing.

Special forces blocked UK resettlement applications from elite Afghan troops

For those who do not want to stand behind our troops , please feel free to stand in front of them when the enemy approaches.

Are you suggesting that we shouldn't investigate alleged war crimes like, say, the Russians?

"Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community."

Right.

Perhaps the blowback is intended to be a kind of reflection? (The kinetic kind? :E )
Spoiler

The Taliban’s Supreme Leader has vowed to start stoning women to death in public as he declared the fight against Western democracy will continue.

“You say it’s a violation of women’s rights when we stone them to death,” said Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada in a voice message, aired on state television over the weekend, addressing Western officials. “But we will soon implement the punishment for adultery. We will flog women in public. We will stone them to death in public,” he declared in his harshest comments since taking over Kabul in August 2021.

“These are all against your democracy but we will continue doing it. We both say we defend human rights – we do it as God’s representative and you as the devil’s.”

Afghanistan’s state TV, now under Taliban control, broadcasts voice messages purporting to be from Akhundzada, who has never been seen in public aside from a few old portraits. He is believed to be based in southern Kandahar, the stronghold of the Taliban.
A snip from an article in the Telegraph.
One wonders what the punishment for men committing adultery is.

According to islamweb.net and other sources, the punishment for married adulterers and adulteresses should be the same.

  1. Adulterers will get severe punishment, such as:
    1. 100 lashes
    2. Embarrassed in front of many people (Qs 24:2)
    3. Alienated for a year
    4. Possible stoning to death
“ . . . When an unmarried male commits adultery with an unmarried female (they should receive) one hundred lashes and banishment for one year. And in case of married male committing adultery with a married female, they shall receive one hundred lashes and be stoned to death” (Sahih Muslim Book 17, No 4191).
  2. No forgiveness for adultery
“. . . a person from amongst the Muslims came to Allah’s Messenger . . . He called him saying: . . . I have committed adultery . . . he testified four times against his own self . . . Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Take him and stone him . . .” (Sahih Bukhari Book 017, No 4196).

What Taliban practice is, I cannot say.
