Usual verbiage I see of those awarded for everyone else’s work. Totally pointless in the modern times, unless active service awards.

I would rather see an OBE awarded to a street cleaner or sewage worker of 30 years service than a desk jockey who simply gets it for being promoted usually off the backs of others.

Took longer than usual to post your standard pish.

True, but one is consistent.

I didn't get an honour in my time either!

NutLoose 12th Jun 2021 16:03

I wouldn’t want one Langley and like 99% of that list, I didn’t deserve one either.

Cat Techie 12th Jun 2021 17:47

No DCOS or AOC's commendations published yet. The one thing I look at to see if I know anyone on that list. Then again my pension goes up and gets index linked tomorrow.
I got two commendations in my time. One was not earned. The second one was major extracurricular work so I have no issues in hanging it up. End of the day, just pieces of paper.

Easy Street 12th Jun 2021 19:17

Kate Bingham was just a “desk jockey” in the vaccine rollout, Nutty: didn’t design any, didn’t do any trials analysis, didn’t jab anyone. You saying she shouldn’t be made a dame on that basis?

She was a political choice. Politically placed and alas a typical Tory inhouse honours job. Personnally she has done nothing outside her paid job to get it IMHO. Unlike all the doctors and nurses that have been in the war zone with dodgy equipment (including my eldest).

langleybaston 12th Jun 2021 19:34

I believe that the Damehood was a rather thin award, considering her achievement.

England sport captains and thespians get knighthoods and damehoods. I honestly believe she should have been given a Life Peerage.

This argument that people should have to go outside their paid job to earn honours is, ahem, bollocks. You’ve recognised that yourself in the last line: doctors and nurses are doing their paid job. Unfortunately it is a line of thought that has traction in some parts of the military, and that’s why we have some people who are interested in everything except their primary duties. More Kate Bingham-style awards, please.

Married to a Tory MP.. I'll get my coat. You may support corruption. I don't.

Might affect her income. End of the day not a military award either so any arguement is more appropriate to Jet Blast IMHO. A political inhouse award. Most people I know getting MBEs in the military have gone way above and beyond their primary duties to be awarded it.

They were putting theirs and their families lives on the line, ( she wasn’t ) day in day out for the last couple of years.

Yeph. The retired around here may have forgotten that.

Nolongerin 13th Jun 2021 07:36

In order of pride for me,

1. BEM
2. Royal Warrant
3. Queen’s Commission

While Public Health England and the NHS [at leadership levels] were like rabbits in the headlights, the appointment of Bingham was a rare success in a bleak saga ............... whereas I don't think any Western government shone in dealing with the Chinese Plague, the Vaccination program - from purchasing to distribution to jabbing has been akin to a victory in a war. Bingham was the successful general in that war.
Her achievement will, directly or indirectly, benefit all Brits, even refuseniks. She was unpaid.
This in comparison to sporting heroes [!!!! heroes !!!!!} or actors is a level above ....... unless you are/were an England cricket supporter, Alistair Cook has done nothing for you or us.

I disagree with you opinions on most subjects. This one included. The NHS has ****e leadership from upstair at the beginning. Try Boris shaking hands with every Covid patient. Your party. Bingham's sucess story was due to the infrastruture that existed below her, not because of her. Alistair Cook has done much charity work you have never seen, or cared about. You done any charity work at all? I did loads for a dying friend that was the finishing statement for my last commendation, not that I was doing the charity work for any other reason than my friend.

Old-Duffer 14th Jun 2021 17:58

My vote goes to Kate Bingham.

Of course there are many others whose contribution needs to be remarked. My 'exam' question is: "Contrast and compare the contribution played by Kate Bingham and Baroness Dido Harding to defeating Covid". Answers should not contain the words 'Ah' and 'Um', so much loved by our prime minister!

Is the correct answer.

Nothing could make me more happy than to note that you disagree with my opinions.

You apparently need a fact-finder, an editor, and a proof-reader. Please ask someone else, the job looks difficult.

I suspect that some of you have missed the last two words of the title of this thread.:= Jet Blast beckons....

Have a look back up stream and note who did not introduce the subject of Dame Kate.
After that the thread became uninformed prejudice versus reasoned argument. based on facts.

Training Risky 15th Jun 2021 10:04

MBE: My Blokes Efforts.
OBE: Other Blokes Efforts.
CBE: Carried by Blokes Efforts.

You don't have to be good at your job to get one. Just say the right things when the right people are listening.

Someone mentioned corrupt political awards. I will get my coat.

Same old negative comments we endure twice yearly. Congratulations to all the Military personnel who received an award.

Regrettably often coming from the same people.

Well, I’m sorry, but there are a heck of a lot more deserved people to be awarded, nurses and doctors that have been on the COVID frontline for the past couple of years, often living apart from their families to try and protect them, and then there are those medical staff that died in the fight, they are the ones that truly deserve these awards, not some senior officer that have received it for being promoted.

The country needs to recognise and recognise in bucketloads those that are “at war” with this disease to protect us all.

Big Unit Specialist 16th Jun 2021 07:06

Nutloose,
you do realise that you can nominate someone worthy of an award don’t you? Stop moaning and put your money where your mouth is.

Hear hear.

Thank the lord that AVM Bunny James' vital war-winning work as Gender Champion has been recognised and his he/him pronouns are in his bio.

(/sarcasm)

Having successfully nominated a few people in the past, (never got anything much myself) on the most recent form of application I noted a new change. I had to put in my "gender" and "ethnicity" and also that of the person I was recommending.................

Yes the military's old "you recommend me for a CBE and I will put you in for an OBE old chap"

Unfortunately the form does not include a section to put forward who you think shouldn't be recognised.

Big Unit Specialist 16th Jun 2021 17:57

No, you misunderstand me; if you are so convinced frontline health workers deserve an award then get off your arse and nominate them. If you don’t who will?

I declined to participate in the regular 6-monthly winge-fest here, but that one really shocked me. How sad that “Merit” is now seemingly quota-allocated.

MPN11 - although I have to say that particular one was successful (MBE) despite the fact that we were both "stale white males"!

If memory serves me, I got the ISM for the Head Chef/Cook in the Mess many years ago. Sadly no other 'notable individuals' came under my purview in my time.
