Cometh the hour, cometh the man

And I cannot think of anyone who deserves it more....
He Maybe 100, but he deserves a knighthood.

Absolutely! If a tw@t like Ian Duncan-Smith can be knighted (what for?) then we can certainly afford to honour this wonderful old gentleman. The sooner, the better, we could all do with cheering up at the moment!

Tankertrashnav 17th Apr 2020 00:17

Would be nice but I think Captain Tom ought to be sounded out first. At his age he might well not want to be arsed with all the attendant palaver. If he is up for it I think it would be a great idea. Btw why single out IDS? At his level in politics a K pretty well comes with the job. Also does anyone else think it is funny that a Tory PM is plain old Mr Johnson (or more usually just "Boris") but the Labour leader of the opposition is Sir Keir Starmer? :)

Agree. They are easy to dish out.
There should be quite a few others in the line with him.

I give you Dr John Campbell. A reassuring YouTube voice in this time of worry and misinformation.

Any others?

Because he's not too pro China?

The Tories have had all sorts of leaders. Boris has spent a long time becoming 'Boris' avoiding Ks etc. He was always looking to the bigger prize. He will take his Peerage later.

As for Keir, he had probably given up on the idea of very high office, so took the K. His current role may be a bit of a surprise to him; rather like his namesake.

Now this is what the Honours System is for - and they shouldn't take a year kicking it about in a Committee either..........

DODGYOLDFART 17th Apr 2020 09:16

Queens Birthday Honours only just a month away. A great opportunity to slip an extra something special in for Captain Tom I would have thought?

charliegolf 17th Apr 2020 09:27

MSN reporting that 'the Government' is looking at ways Capt Moore 'might be honoured'.

MPN11 17th Apr 2020 10:14

Great respect for what Capt Tom was doing, with his modest aspirations.

However, I try to curb my enthusiasm for an Honour. What he did was a 'good thing', but in normal times barely deserving of much more that a paragraph or two in the local papers.

The fantastic sum raised is, surely, just a manifestation of people jumping on the band-wagon, seeing an easy way to support the NHS etc. and assisted by massive Media coverage. In that context, the honour lies with all those who have donated, in some cases VERY generously.

I anticipate incoming.

Herod 17th Apr 2020 10:20

How about a back-dated promotion? It would give us an excuse to play David Bowie. Seriously, well done that man.,

Dan Gerous 17th Apr 2020 10:21

He even got a cynical bstd like me to contribute, so he must be doing something right. I would like to say to him, give it a rest and take a day off. He's been on the telly almost every day now, and his daughter seems to be switched on, but give the guy a break. I'm sure we'd all like to see him reach his hundredth, and maybe Liz will slip a fiver in with his card.:ok:

Geordie_Expat 17th Apr 2020 11:39

Ye Gods, there are some weird folk on this site. How in Hell did anyone manage to bring IDS into the subject, and politics in general !!! Save it for Jetblast. And yeah, lets not honour this amazing gentleman, after all, what has he done ? Unbelievable !!

bunta130 17th Apr 2020 11:54

I'm with MPN on this one. Captain Tom has really captured public imagination, and has proved himself to be a thoroughly good bloke. However, one event should not attract a knighthood......and I am also agin many who receive it under 'dodgy' cover (realising that my view is subjective). He has rightly been lauded by all and sundry, but let's leave it at that.

weemonkey 17th Apr 2020 12:03

Perhaps he might just turn it down too.

He seems pretty switched on.

I think Bunta is suffering from what they used to call "Knight Starvation" in the Civil Service.............. ;)

Along with all the other men and women who are carrying out similar good works for their chosen form of charity, irrespective of their age? It's not always only a matter of the amount of money raised, although I readily accept that Captain Tom's great efforts and consequent recognition have clearly caught the British public's attention, largely through the media. I'm with MPN11.

In other obscured news, there’s a 90+ woman trying to ‘reach’ the summit of some Scottish peak by climbing her stairs (assisted by her walking stick) to reach the equivalent height. I doubt she’ll raise millions, bless her.

Well I suspect £12 mm for the NHS is a bigger contribution than spending 30 years in some mediocre civil Service job

You seems to have a bit of a downer on Civil Servants. I'm not aware of that many who have knighthoods for mediocre jobs.

MPN11 17th Apr 2020 18:07

Ahem ... let’s not go there, eh?

ISTR a fair few 2/3/4* Military get State Honours too ... as do cricketers, footballers and Media luvvies. The system is what it is, with all the imperfections of a human-invented pecking order, which is why my MBE didn’t arrive in the post.

NutLoose 18th Apr 2020 00:39

I look upon it as you give the likes of Seb Coe a knighthood and later a Lordship for running at the peak of his physical fitness whilst being well paid for it..... The same goes for cricketers, rowers, athletes, footballers etc..

Now weigh that against someone at the opposite end of the spectrum who has taken on this task for no reward to himself, but in the hope that he can help those that need our support at this time of crisis..

Now which is the better man / woman. I know my choice.

And not forgetting the very different criteria between the procedures for the Civil and Military Lists. I also suspect that MPN11 is being modest....:)

A Knighthood for "political services" (ie financing a political party) costs around £ 5 mm I understand

So maybe we give Tom a K with 5 bars...................

oldmansquipper 19th Apr 2020 09:54

There will probably be a K for whoever thought up the self funding green ‘carers’ badge (£8:99?) and one for Gary Lineker for donating a couple of weeks inflated Beeb wages....

Wensleydale 19th Apr 2020 10:15

Perhaps a knighthood is not appropriate for a man of such advanced years when something a bit more permanent is needed. Why not name the hospital where he had his hip surgery after him? After all - it was because of his treatment at this hospital that he started his money raising campaign. "Captain Tom's" has a good ring to it!

treadigraph 19th Apr 2020 10:27

Telegraph reports that Peter Monk hopes to be permitted to give Tom Moore a Spitfire birthday flyby on 30th April and a ride in a two seater later in the year when things calm down.

Queen prepares special birthday tribute to heroic Captain Tom Moore - 'Will be emotional'

The 99-year-old has nearly raised £30million for the NHS by walking laps of his garden in Bedfordshire garden. Captain Tom Moore will also be honoured with an RAF flypast, as well as receiving a personalised telegram from the Queen to mark his 100th birthday.

Producers at BBC Breakfast have worked alongside Buckingham Palace to organise the celebrations to mark the war hero's big day on Thursday.
Tom - who currently holds the UK No1 single, for his joint song with Michael Ball and NHS heroes - will have the entire programme dedicated to his life and achievements.

The team at BBC Breakfast have been working closely with the palace, organising the telegram in time for the morning broadcast, which they hope will come with a special message from Her Majesty. They have also been working hard on organising a fly past which will honour Tom's service to the country throughout his life.

A TV insider told The Sun: “It's going to be a really emotional day and they want to make it as memorable as possible for Tom by way of thanks for all he has done. They're lining up lots of surprises for him too. What Tom has achieved is the most incredible feat and the whole show will be dedicated to Tom and his special day.”

Richard Frediani, editor of BBC Breakfast, said plans still need to be confirmed, adding: “Having followed Captain Tom's incredible story from the start the UK's most watched morning show will make sure the nation can safely come together to celebrate Captain Tom's 100th birthday on Thursday morning on BBC Breakfast.”......

Matches the Iron Cross awarded to Herr Flick?

Delighted to see that he is to be honoured by an RAF flypast.

Good call decision makers.
