The title gave me a chuckle as I remember moving into married quarters at a station north of the border with my 8-month old daughter. Bathing her one night we found the remains of a dead bird coming out of the hot tap. Apparently the hot water tank had recently been replaced and the bird must have found its way into the tank before installation. On the up side we did get the best part of a years free electricity, despite our calls to the company for someone to read our meter. |
It's always been bad, but it seems worse now. During GW1 we were housed in a condemned wooden hut with no hot water and toilets that didn't to flush. Meanwhile, a superb transit block was being built for transit aircrew. When completed it was occupied by civilians living in the mess and transit aircrew still occupied the condemned wooden hut.

I stayed in the WD OM for a week around 1985,and thought it pretty grim.What I remember most however,was that the fitted furniture,wardrobes etc was raised on stilts about 8-10'' above the floor.I was later told that this was so that the space below could be counted in order to meet the minimum square footage requirement for officers accomodation.Is there any veracity to this,or is it just myth ? |
Radley. In 1971 detached from Odiham to the Bahamas. One night in down-town hotel before deploying to the out-islands. Next morning clean teeth,bend down and cup hand under cold tap to rinse,turn on tap and suck: aware of more than water in my mouth: spit out biggest cock roach I've ever seen. Equally unhappy it galloped to the plug hole and disappeared.Probable "Exit left laughing."

In the early 70s HQ 1Gp took on some hirings in Bawtry village to save airmen the commute from Lindholme. The houses had been fitted with full gas central heating by the builder, but because airmen weren't entitled to C/H in the bedrooms, the upstairs radiators were removed!

That said I'm currently living in a 1939 qtr that has had almost nothing done to it in the mean time and is bloody freezing!!! :) |

Usually the OH's OMQ went with the appointment, so the last 10 years were in Type 2 OMQs. No complaints about the state of the places, although having new UPVC double glazing installed when I was trying to sleep off 12-h night shifts during GW1 was a bit of a PITA! :) |
