One gets the feeling from that post that the Germans need to decide which NATO they’re in, especially with the parlous state of the GAF these days.

Don't forget to add in the total electrical rewiring (ops/accommodation blocks/MQs) from 240v to US standard 110v (again!).

All the buildings that matter already have both 240V and 110V !

That was a few years ago and only one Sqn. This move is much bigger and so is RIAT these days. One wonders what the outcome for RIAT will be. Whatever, accommodation in the local area may be tight.

Could/would RIAT move?

Some enthusiast(s) seem to think that the organisers were looking for alternate venue (very limited today ) for the Air Tattoo? Obviously not for next year because the show is already being planned!

In theory can anyone see RIAT being moved to Boscombe Down as the IAT was held there in 1993.

Cheers

RIAT 1993 was at Fairford. That was the year the MiG29s collided.

BossEyed 27th Nov 2018 17:29

Boscombe was 1992.

I vaguely remember it wasn't called IAT but something a bit similar. (Pretty sure it predated the "Royal" name by quite a few years).

One quick Google later, and:

That was when IAT was only held in odd numbered years (From 93 it was annual) - RIAT was 96

SpringHeeledJack 28th Nov 2018 08:58

Maybe they can hold the RIAT at Mildenhall ;-)

It was indeed - I was sent on crash guard from Innsworth for it....

Think of all that traffic on the A303...

That said, I did go to the 1992 Boscombe event, don't recall it being a nightmare to get in but maybe I've suppressed the horror.

All,
I think you'll find that RIAT has contracted a bit over the years. No longer will you get 200 or so aircraft in the static park.
When was the last time they had 25 Hercs etc on the flight line.

Just my personal view, so feel free to challenge.

muppetofthenorth 28th Nov 2018 15:28

Why would you need 25? Seen one, seen them all...

racedo 28th Nov 2018 18:02

Is it just me......................... but putting more and more assets into less and less feel counter productive from a Security Operations pov.

Absolutely, the available airfields, from an RAF view, in the UK has reduced much dramatically; Honington, Wattisham, St Mawgan, Coltishall, Cottesmore, Scampton, Leuchars, Kinloss, Brawdy, Chivenor, Binbrook, Abingdon, St Athan, Church Fenton, Finningley, were all what would now be termed 'Primary Flying Stations' in my day. Now effectively all gone. Add this the four main operating bases in Germany; Bruggen, Laarbruch, Wildenrath and Gutersloh.

So cuts to the RAF haven't gone too deep in the last 30 years.

Interesting Colour schemes from say Down Under, or Canada , India, Latin America ( Brazil is a regular attendee on/off and Colombia did well 2012) , Mid East Far East , USCG (. 2005).

i wish lol! Preferred the old Mildenhall Air Fete because it was run by the USAFE, reasonable price entry, great hosts.

Laughingly first few years I attended RIAT , wondered why US were not organising it as it’s their base alb it leased by MoD....be better burger vans, etc etc. Only as I started my career in the industry that the USAF hands over Fairford to the RIAt folks ( they have an office on base anyhow ) few months beforehand to do all the organising.

There are rumbles from the spotter community that RIAT viewing is being limited with likes of the OEMs taking space with chalets /hospitality suites. Also the spotter community and attendees also get into rows because of ladders in their way, obstructing of view and fighting for space close to runway.

Though never figured this one out, in US...military air shows are free entry as it’s their way of showing the taxpayer what they pay for... but here we pay....

Scampton was not that brilliant last year....paid RIAT prices and tbh apart from the RCAF CF188 on static and HHA....it was disappointing.

Cheers

Ahhh, Mildenhall. One of our favorite overnight stops when flying the MAC line in C-141's (mid to late 1970's). A good flight engineer could typically craft a "write-up" for unscheduled Friday or Saturday RON's. The O'Club and nearby establishments demonstrated our "special relationship" with the British. Still have a mirror bought from a vendor at the O'club hanging over my fireplace.

Never visited Mildenhall, but some time ago attended RIAT at Fairford. Had a new Kodak digital camera at the time and took this photo of Italian AF Aerobatic team "Frecce Tricolori" performing there. At the same show there was a contribution by the Chilean Air Force "Halcones" with Extra 300's, pretty good display too.
A bit of thread creep, but is anyone able to give me the year these two teams appeared at RIAT?
TIA

Super. Watching already-dried paint! ;)

Although I did enjoy watching the Swiss, Turkish and Saudi teams displaying in Malta last year. It made a change from the Reds! Not close enough to see the paint scheme, though.
