The Russian ambassador to Ankara, Andrei Karlov, has been wounded by a gunman while visiting a photo gallery in the Turkish capital.

Several other people were reportedly also injured in the attack, a day after protests in Turkey over Russia's military intervention in Syria.

According to Russian TV, the ambassador had been attending an exhibition called "Russia as seen by Turks". Police later "neutralised" the gunman, reports say, without giving details. Mr Karlov was rushed to hospital. Video of the event shows Mr Karlov making a speech when gunshots ring out.

The attacker shouted about Aleppo and Syria The camera pulls back to show a smartly dressed gunman, wearing a suit and tie, waving a pistol and shouting.
He can be heard yelling "Don't forget about Aleppo, don't forget about Syria" and uses the Islamic phrase "Allahu Akbar" (God is great").

US state department spokesman John Kirby said US officials were aware of reports about the attack on the ambassador.
"We condemn this act of violence, whatever its source," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."

While there were protests in recent days, on a political level the Turkish and Russian governments have been co-operating in the Aleppo ceasefire operation, the BBC's Turkey correspondent, Mark Lowen, reports. It is too early to know the motives of the attacker, who has not yet been named. Some reports say he entered the art gallery using a police ID card, our correspondent adds.

It's the price he's paid to get a foothold in the middle east. In the years to come, Syria will be built with arab and russian money. There will be russian army and airforce bases. It is a significant coup for Putin.

ALL of this is because he's very angry that his predecessor buckled under Western expansionism. NATO have brought this on themselves and now they will suffer the slow but certain erosion of their eastern front for years to come.

It is interesting that the Russian Ambassador actually had a Turkish body guard, if that was what he was, not a Russian team.

If the assassin was on the Russian Embassy payroll, not sure that the career prospects for the head of security are too bright, unless the assassin came fully vetted etc by the Turks.

Assassin was a Turkish armed policeman - who was given entry after showing his ID and telling security he had been sent as a reinforcement.

Islam is culturally imbedded in that whole area in and around the Levant. In a sense you are both wrong. To say "nothing to do with" ignores about 1400 years of cultural inertia. To say "must have to do with" is a gross oversimplification.

This thread is about some :mad: who shot an ambassador who was in a museum interacting with the public in the country who he was representing his nation to. In short, a guy gets shot while doing his job, a job that is generally intended as a peaceful/positive role.
