johnbom 2nd May 2016 21:07

Just heard over Doncaster

MACH2NUMBER 2nd May 2016 21:14

The rarely heard sound of freedom perhaps?

johnbom 2nd May 2016 21:24

Yes but for what reason overland at this hour on a bank holiday?

sir 2nd May 2016 21:28

Heard it in York too - wow !

Looks like a Voyager out of BZN passing through up here too now.

814man 2nd May 2016 21:28

According to information QRA Typhoons escorted a civilian airliner into Newcastle Airport after it went off course.

MACH2NUMBER 2nd May 2016 21:34

Defence of our national airspace does not stop at night, or on Bank Holidays.

Rhino power 2nd May 2016 21:37

QRA launch from Coningsby to intercept/escort AF1558 into NCL, lost comms...

SATCOS WHIPPING BOY 2nd May 2016 21:43

If you are going to get a 10Ton Tie over land, it may as well be over Yorkshire.

The sound of freedom :ok:

Top West 50 2nd May 2016 21:51

Would that have been "buster?"

That's why I made the point😊

Fake Sealion 2nd May 2016 21:58

Heard at 2153 in Knaresborough. Knew what it was straight away but astonished to hear it overland. People were going outside to stare at the sky.

ShyTorque 2nd May 2016 22:08

Oh Bother, I just launched my home made cruise missile nuke towards Moscow in retaliation.....silly me.

Genstabler 2nd May 2016 23:06

Bugger! Must have slept through it!

Sonic booms heard as RAF scrambles Typhoons - BBC News

MPN11 3rd May 2016 08:13

Nice to see the taxpayer is getting good value from Southern Q these days ;)

JulieAndrews 3rd May 2016 09:22

a handy reminder for all those 'startled' viewers that the RAF are still operating.
Beggars belief that comms failures still occur in airliners these days - was under the impression that they had various means for communicating?

Pontius Navigator 3rd May 2016 11:54

Julie, one reason for comma failure is failing to enter the correct frequency on the box. Don't say this was the case.

Wander00 3rd May 2016 12:41

And I thought this thread was going to be about Trenchard........

Haraka 3rd May 2016 13:50

Work hard! Play hard! TRENCHARD! ...(the b*astard) :)

langleybaston 3rd May 2016 14:55

Some heavy duty whingeing taking place on the mother-site. "Over-reaction" is the theme.

Makes I larf!

It really is remarkable that people who presumably want to be protected do not will the means of protection.

Tashengurt 3rd May 2016 15:38

I didn't hear the boom but heard the aircraft overshoot at Newcastle.
Didn't seem long between me saying "Ooh that's military." To the wife and the story (or non story) appearing on the news sites.
Just a shame it was dark. The last RAF jets I saw here were F3s!

CoffmanStarter 3rd May 2016 15:46

The last RAF jets I saw here were F3s ! ...
Tash ... Would that be Lightning F3's ? ;)

... I'll get my coat ...

orionsbelt 3rd May 2016 20:11

If Af 1558 landed at 2220hrs why was the Tanker flying a hold at 25000 feet off the coast until nearly midnight? (FR24.com playback on AF1558 then look for tanker.) Or were the Boys just taking advantage of geting some extra time in?
Good job anyway, todays af 1558 is over Kent now

Just wait for the next boom in January :)

JulieAndrews 4th May 2016 11:30

Pontious
So no answer on the frequency selected?
What do you do?
You go back to last-used frequency of course - not faff about long enough to cause alarm in present climate - then to make it worse - there were reports of aircraft not transponding?
Would like to have a quick look at maintenance/snag sheet prior to flight ;-)
Sounds like a severe case of 'poor airmanship'
And Yes, I am speculating as last time I looked this is still a 'rumour' network
;-)

ICM 4th May 2016 11:56

Orion: I'd imagine that the Voyager on QRA standby is fuelled for a mission that might last several hours such that, if an Alert is all over quickly, there's a need to burn down to max landing weight. If that happens during the day, it may prove possible to divert a bit of trade in that direction to take advantage of the situation, though perhaps not at midnight.

Wander00 4th May 2016 12:36

JA - but it is a French aircraft we are talking about

Pontius Navigator 4th May 2016 12:37

Julie, indeed, but we don't know the flash to bang time. As I said, only one possibility, shouldn't happen but obviously could and did.

Yes, it could be poor airmanship, didn't I read that they had not responded to guard which does perhaps indicate system rather than human factors, I am sure we will find out.

Maybe not.
