Kawasaki P-1 demo flight @RIAT
Thanks to the temporary car park within the picturesque village of Whelford, and beyond on the Saturday:( missed the P-1 display albeit saw it through the trees as queuing to get into Red Car Park.
But next day got there mega early and here are my photos of the P-1, Any thoughts for next MPA:mad: ? cheers http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...pspjtpdd2b.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...pst7dx7oor.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...pse4sllzpf.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...psnjxmgta3.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...psviwkhfxk.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...psumdfuut7.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...psbbdqiwi2.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...psrcj4lkqs.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...psvdml4cak.jpg Cheers |
What noodle put the AAR probe on the back?

They must be MAD ;)

Yup, looks boring enough to be an MPA.
And enough like a Nimrod to please a lot on here with that double chine hull. Surely 4 engines is two too many these days though. |
I confess to not checking official data; but in the static park it appeared to be noticeably smaller than Poseidon (Boeing 737) which came as a surprise.
It is however purpose built as opposed to a bodged airliner; and appeared to have all the toys to be an effective MPA that can attack as well as discover. Best asset was just how quiet it was, and former kipper fleet work mates have explained why jets are superior to turboprops when sub hunting so it gets my vote. If I was operating on some of the less well known sorties that Nimrod did in its day; I would want four engines. |
The P-8 is no more of a bodged airliner than the P-3 is or the Nimrod was. Arguably the two most successful MPAs ever.
|
I.m sure I'd prefer 4 engines doing SAR oversight at 30W, on a dark stormy November night!
|
Anyone given the P-1 a name yet? I can think of a couple!
Nice pics btw. |

Anyone given the P-1 a name yet? I can think of a couple! 'Real' possibilities might include Suijin: God of water, or Kane (a foreshortening of Omoikane): God of intelligence & wisdom, then there's Tengu: wise bird. Not too many others trip of the Western tongue as well as they do in Japanese. 'Tsunami' fits well - and globally understood, but perhaps somewhat lacking in tact. |
According to various Defence Media; the P-1 made a demo flight to potential customers last Friday, but the 'customers' remain anonymous. It is also only two years in squadron service and due operational declaration in September, although missions have been flown since March of this year. The engines are Japanese manafactured and unique to type. It would be good to see it give Poseidon a run for its money as a contender to an MoD contract. With Europes aging P3 and Atlantic fleet, the Japanese would welcome a Euro launch customer. Lets hope that QinetiQ and RR do not influence any potential developments. I doubt the US aviation industry sit on a pedestal with the UK procurement agencies given the dramas of DAVE. (f35)

UK Maritime Patrol Aircraft - An Urgent Requirement
Wouldn´t this be more appropriate to this thread |
Chopper,
Nice pics, thank you. |
Great pics but... I hate to say, reminds me of the over-engined 146...
Banzai!! |
|
Cargo
Can they reconfig to include a rear door? For loading long's
We looked closely at the BAE 146's Cargo, but running 3 hr's each way, with the amount of payload made it hard to cover costs |
Look at the size of the cockpit windows in the Kawasaki!
Must be great visibility. http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/...psijenfltl.gif |
i heard a rumor the project is called " Mount Niitaka" rivals "case white" for political correctness
|
I'd call it the P-1 Tiger, perhaps 3 times over, just to add to Boeing's surprise.
:ok: |
I'd like 20 please!
|
Quote: Anyone given the P-1 a name yet? I can think of a couple! Um, Nimlod? :D Bravo!!! :ok::ok: Just covered my keyboard in snot. |
Actually, I was thinking of either Niptune or Niprod!
|
It is also only two years in squadron service and due operational declaration in September, Aged Aviator: Never fly the Mk 1!! Young Teeters: The Mk 1 what? AA: The Mk1 anything!! YT:  |
OK ... If we were to buy/lease the P1 ... How many would we realistically need ?
There has been one (tongue-in-cheek) bid for twenty ... a bit unlikely I would have thought ... so what might be a realistic fleet size ? Where would we base them now ... RAF St Mawgan and rescue Kinloss from the Army Engineers ? Presumably there would be a need for rotating deployments to the Falklands and possibly Gibraltar to assist with the Med 'People Trafficking' problem. |
Actually, I was thinking of either Niptune or Niprod! /racist mode off. |
Is it fit for purpose, or simply a source of sniggers at the tinted people? The UK equivalent: Zero.
|
A brief conversation from many years ago ........ Aged Aviator: Never fly the Mk 1!! Young Teeters: The Mk 1 what? AA: The Mk1 anything!! YT: |
RAF St Mawgan's airfield site has been sold off to the county council but having said that, given the low volume of civilian flights I don't think there's anything to say that the RAF couldn't share it? (Given they often drop in now) The old Nimrod hangers are being used privately now for the Classic Air Force and other private things I believe, but I think there would be plenty of space to build new ones inside the wire next to the HAS site
|
Classic Airforce have more or less shuffled back up to Coventry post the cheap rent ending..
As we called one of our maritime aircraft Shackleton after the well known explorer, perhaps we could adopt a Japanese Antartica explorers name to call it, One drops to mind Nobu mk1 sounds cool :E https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japa...tic_Expedition |
Nice one Nutty ...
[StarWarsModeOn] But Nobu was also a group of four Cargo ferries belonging to the Rebel Alliance in the Airam sector during the operations of Task Force Vengeance ... [/StarWarsModeOff] :} |
Thanks for that Nutloose, I hadn't realised - in fact I'm down in Cornwall on holiday at the moment and saw their VC10 today from the road, sorry for the thread drift but I don't suppose anyone knows what will happen to that as it's a tad big to move by road, let alone Cornish ones!
|
Well, if we're calling the F35 Dave, we could always call the P1 Babs, what with the carrier already being Betty...... :p
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worl...anese_aircraft |
Hawk,
Several aircraft to big to move remain, the VC10, The BAC 1-11 and I think the Varsity, along with the resident Shack they are working on a nucleus of a new museum. http://www.cornishguardian.co.uk/Sho...ail/story.html For more read http://forum.keypublishing.com/showt...ewquay-Closure |
Give any new MPA to the RN...basing problem solved...
|
They could call it the "Singapore"..............
|
Well I'll climb mount Niitaka

The "Name the Japanese MPA" thread is almost funnier than the Caption competition. Needed to rush for a quick wee after "Nimlod" though
|
Good looking aircraft albeit a bit stubby.
Wonder if they shutdown the outer engines on patrol ? |
Did you not fly the 40 year old Mk1 Puma JTO? First pilot, day only (just) is my Puma qualification.......... But rather more hours on the Squirrel - also a Mk 1 of course. |
