Kawasaki P-1 demo flight @RIAT

Thanks to the temporary car park within the picturesque village of Whelford, and beyond on the Saturday:( missed the P-1 display albeit saw it through the trees as queuing to get into Red Car Park.

But next day got there mega early and here are my photos of the P-1,

Any thoughts for next MPA:mad: ?

cheers

They must be MAD ;)

switch_on_lofty 22nd Jul 2015 19:12

Yup, looks boring enough to be an MPA.
And enough like a Nimrod to please a lot on here with that double chine hull.
Surely 4 engines is two too many these days though.

Tiger_mate 22nd Jul 2015 19:50

I confess to not checking official data; but in the static park it appeared to be noticeably smaller than Poseidon (Boeing 737) which came as a surprise.

It is however purpose built as opposed to a bodged airliner; and appeared to have all the toys to be an effective MPA that can attack as well as discover. Best asset was just how quiet it was, and former kipper fleet work mates have explained why jets are superior to turboprops when sub hunting so it gets my vote. If I was operating on some of the less well known sorties that Nimrod did in its day; I would want four engines.

The P-8 is no more of a bodged airliner than the P-3 is or the Nimrod was. Arguably the two most successful MPAs ever.

I.m sure I'd prefer 4 engines doing SAR oversight at 30W, on a dark stormy November night!

Anyone given the P-1 a name yet? I can think of a couple!

Nice pics btw.

Check out the picture of the two, nose to nose, in this Wikipedia article...P1 looks big enough :ok:

Um, Nimlod?

'Real' possibilities might include Suijin: God of water, or Kane (a foreshortening of Omoikane): God of intelligence & wisdom, then there's Tengu: wise bird. Not too many others trip of the Western tongue as well as they do in Japanese.

'Tsunami' fits well - and globally understood, but perhaps somewhat lacking in tact.

Tiger_mate 22nd Jul 2015 21:31

According to various Defence Media; the P-1 made a demo flight to potential customers last Friday, but the 'customers' remain anonymous. It is also only two years in squadron service and due operational declaration in September, although missions have been flown since March of this year. The engines are Japanese manafactured and unique to type. It would be good to see it give Poseidon a run for its money as a contender to an MoD contract. With Europes aging P3 and Atlantic fleet, the Japanese would welcome a Euro launch customer. Lets hope that QinetiQ and RR do not influence any potential developments. I doubt the US aviation industry sit on a pedestal with the UK procurement agencies given the dramas of DAVE. (f35)

Cargo

Can they reconfig to include a rear door? For loading long's

We looked closely at the BAE 146's Cargo, but running 3 hr's each way, with the amount of payload made it hard to cover costs

Look at the size of the cockpit windows in the Kawasaki!
Must be great visibility.

i heard a rumor the project is called " Mount Niitaka" rivals "case white" for political correctness

Just This Once... 23rd Jul 2015 06:47

I'd call it the P-1 Tiger, perhaps 3 times over, just to add to Boeing's surprise.

:ok:
