Makes one wonder just what are the Health & Safety risks associated with this airframe are. The fact that it is old is not a hazard in itself. The spokeswoman refers to its deteriorating condition, well assess the risk and put control measures in place to reduce risk to as low as is reasonably practicable (ALARP). I understand that every Cadet Sqn in the country is parented by an active RAF Station which will have a cadet liaison officer. The station probably has access to a Health & Safety professional (in fact a few years ago the ATC had their own H&S organisation, might still have) were they consulted reference the risk assessment process. Seems a shame to get rid of something that motivates the youngsters.:=:=

More likely one of the safety walla's has seen that people go within 30ft of it and have started having cold sweats that they will get sued if someone so much as breaks a nail on it.

Its one of the nice things about moving away from the UK. There is an old Russian steam engine dumped in a play park for kids near me.

The little sods have free range to climb all over it. I have spent hours watching the GF's nephews and nieces playing in that park. Seen a few fall off into the surrounding sand and bounce. Its up to the parents if they deem it to dangerous to play on. they also have a witches cradle and all the stuff we used to have as kids and is now deemed too dangerous in the UK.

I suspect it's more to do with the estate manager wanting to absolutely remove any sort of H&S liability from his "plot".

You'd have thought an air cadet unit might be able to access some airframe maintenance instruction occasionally and not short of volunteer labour.

I smell a missuse of the phrase 'Health and Safety'.
Why is it unsafe?
Is it so corroded it's about to collapse?
Has someone wafted a radiaton counter near it an got a single click?
Did someone forget to disarm the seat and a naughty cadet has nicked the safet pin?
We need to know.
Inappropriate use of 'Health and Safety' is in itself dangerous.

Why on earth would the USMC want what is essentially an early AV-8? AV-8B is a different beast.

Didn't Dave promise that any organization that quoted 'elfin safety' as an excuse would have to explain exactly what the concerns were or am I living in a dream world where people have common sense and children are allowed to play outdoors

If its anything like XM607 at Waddington, then there will be large areas of corrosion on exposed metal, such the jet pipes, leading to some very sharp edges...I am not surprized that the Harrier has been deemed dangerous if it is in a similar condition. The advice at Waddington is that we are no longer allowed to walk under XM607 just in case, although we warn visitors to her that "if you do then on your own head be it". (And no, here is no public money available to put it right).

1 Sqn has (technically) got a Spifire at a base soon to be vacated

3 Sqn has got one already

4 Sqn - Now theres a possibility...

As for 20 and 233 well they have long gone

IV(AC) Sqn were after the airframe that has just been sold to the public sector. A Business Case was lodged and discounted. These days our RAF Heritage is manned by people who cannot see beyond ££££ especially 100k for a GR3.

I very much doubt that GR3 that IV Sqn was after was sold by the MoD for £100,000, more likely a tenth of that figure (or less). The people who sell it on will get that figure (or more).
