Wa-hey. Stuffy's back. Beer and peanuts for one please; this should be good:cool:

Stuffy 5th Feb 2014 18:36

Well I prefer Real Ale or Guinness.

Thank heaven for Wetherspoons.

Other pubs a mortgage is necessary.

Stuffy 5th Feb 2014 18:41

Bloodhound.

No MPA doesn't make sense.

Technology is changing so quickly.

The beancounters are confused.

I have no answer.

Do you ?

Give me an answer the UK can afford.

Don't forget we must give ALL our money to the foreign aid budget.

betty swallox 5th Feb 2014 19:42

Oh, FFS!

Stuffy...

Frankly, I'm only reading this thread for $hits and giggles now!!

Any semblance of a debate is long gone. I'm just logging on to have a laugh now.

It's working.

Pontius Navigator 5th Feb 2014 21:22

Betty, pass me another Bateman's

I suggest Anglo-French joint operations with ATL2 Atlantiques. Probably from two UK bases?

Stuffy,

For the purposes of entertainment, can you please expand on the above?

Do you mean mixed FR/UK crews? Do you mean a whole sqn of UK aircrew flying the ATL2 gifted to the RAF by France? Which 2 UK bases would you pick and why? and any other pearls of wisdom that you care to add...

Pontius Navigator 6th Feb 2014 08:54

PA, in answer to your last, the answer be obvious, St Mawgan and Manston, either end of Le English Channel.

Now I did see a very smart Falcon 50 on a SAROP in the Channel last year.

Now the ATL2 has been out of production for 27 years. How about resurrecting the ATL3?

Maybe that is what the man was doing at Brize behind closed doors:}

Stuffy 6th Feb 2014 09:14

St Mawgan and Lossiemouth.

ATL2s deliveries began around 1990.

They are being upgraded.

In 1995 a joint ATL3 was proposed.

There is collaboration between the UK and France.

Here is an interesting Canadian perspective from four years ago:-

Canadian Aerospace - Strategic Investment - Aurora Replacement - CSeries Case Study - RCAF CSeries - Aerospace Sector - CASR Aerospace - Canadian American Strategic Review - Aerospace Industry - Industry Canada - National Aerospace and Defence Strate

betty swallox 6th Feb 2014 10:42

That's it!! Stuffy for CAS.

PN. Mines a Belhaven!!

Party Animal 6th Feb 2014 12:44

Stuffy - if you look in the latest edition of the BINA ERS (dated 6 Feb 14), you may notice that there isn't an airfield at St Mawgan - and hasn't been for quite some time!

PingDit 6th Feb 2014 13:08

St. Mawgan went 'civvy' ages ago which would probably preclude that. Perhaps Lossie & Waddo?

I am led to believe that 5 P8s have been reserved for the UK.

How does it find submarines without a MAD boom ?

XV277 6th Feb 2014 13:50

Is that a serious question?

Party Animal 6th Feb 2014 14:08

The crew have live Twitter feeds to provide a heads up and then arrange a rendezvous via Facebook. We're all friends together now don't ya know.

P.S. Stuffy - if you read your own link to St Mawgan, you will see that it has been devoid of a runway since 2008.

Almost correct. It is in fact 8 P5's that have been reserved, otherwise known as the 'Walthar'

It is abundantly clear that you haven't actually done the business or even had any peripheral involvement with it. Unless that is you are invoking the second part of the definition of Covert.

They have built 28 ATL2's, probably about 20 are available?
It is also exceedingly plain that you have not had any interaction with our allies across the Channel. Although I do treasure the memory of restraining an USN Lt Cdr from committing violence upon the person of Cdr Ops at COMESOULANT.

The Entente was less that Cordiale.

I recall we used to trail a long wire behind the aircraft. This was multi-mission capable and amongst other things was a ground proximity warner. Not so good over land with rising ground but excellent over water.

The addition of a hook would obviate the need to a MAD boom.

Pontius Navigator 6th Feb 2014 16:10

BL, MAD used to be the primary search sensor for a particular mission >:)

Stuffy 6th Feb 2014 17:52

Slim pickings for solutions on this thread.

Magnetic Anomoly Detector. Used to detect minute changes caused by the presence of a submarine.
P3 and P2 has them. So does the Atlantique.
So did the Canadair Argus.

What has changed in technology that the P8 does not have one ??

Those that know, know; those that don't know, don't need to know. :ok:

Ah, this explains it all. So an E-6B carries a long cable because it flies high - it all becomes clear - a very clever system to allow for Terrain Following at 35kft!

Many thanks, always wondered about that one.

Yours with thanks,
