What happened to those light brown ankle flying boots issued in the late 70's ... I seem to recall they could only be used on aircraft without ejection seats ?

They got replaced as their airships were p**d off by aircrew wandering about with dirty boots. "Sorry Sir, not allowed to polish them."

I sold mine on eBay when they were possible 15 years old and almost like new. I also sold my 1981 issue black boots when they were over 25 years old. Incredible what people will buy.

Good to see the guys and girls will finally get to be issued with contact lenses (if they prefer) - how long has that taken to sort?!? I recall visiting the RAF Eyeball-docs centre at cranwell about 10 years ago and being told "you'll be getting issued contact lenses next year...." Mind you, did used to enjoy the flight down to London to pop to the old centre followed by a 'fitting' at a Harley St optician:eek: Wonder how much that system cost over the years? Must have taken some specification to get frames that ugly and plastic lenses that scratched on removal from their case:}

I loved my brown boots; as comfy as slippers and I used them on aircraft with or without ejection seats. Still got them, more for nostalgia as heaven knows when I would wear them.

Good to see things are changing with aircrew kit. But how about the rest of the clothing systems Whats happening in regards to Replacing the Mk3 Cold weather flying jackets..?
The Mk3 Cold weather flying jacket and trousers are being replaced by the Mk4, i believe the first batch has already been issued.

The Mk4 is pretty much the same style but uses modern materials and is warmer, dries out faster etc.... in addition it's actually flame retardent unlike the Mk3.

I believe that the wearing of DPM and MTP jackets rather than the cold weather jacket has been banned at a certain Lincolnshire base.

Haven't worn my Mk3(?) for 20 years and not going to start now (with Mk4).

At least my rudder and brake control will be better with the new boots!

A CS95 outer jacket may be worn with flying clothing, in place of a cold weather flying jacket, at the individual's discretion.

0223. General. No 3 Service Dress covers all forms of operational clothing, including the Personal Clothing System Combat Uniform (PCS CU) and the Combat Soldier 95 (CS95) range (Woodland, desert and multi terrain patterns). Operational clothing is defined as clothing that is required to be worn for operations, operational training and exercises. Operational clothing is issued as part of the initial kitting scale for both male and female personnel. CS95 are issued and worn as authorised in the Air Command Guide to Kitting for Operations and Exercises, held by unit clothing stores. Instructions pertaining to CS95 remain extant until withdrawn from this publication.

See they have designed these new ones more along the lines of Combat boots with more emphasis on walking....... Glad to see they are looking ahead to the future.....
Didn't 'itler form Luftwaffe ground combat units when he ran out of planes or fuel for them to fly..

Let's hope this will not be not a repeat of the recent Belleville boot debacle. You know, the one where a random chap at Linton was asked to trial the boot's airworthiness potential before it was released to the rest of the UK's military aircrew (allegedly the 'trial' could have involved a quick before lunch full and free check - just saying...). Subsequently the design was apparently rejected, after its introduction to service, for various reasons - from the we fear change "the boot's sole is too stiff for my sensitive feet" to the more worthy flight safety related "my foot got jammed in the yaw pedal and scared me" reasons. I hope that this new boot will not be another example of glossy brochures, reality and a lack of thorough testing all failing to protect the end-user.

No apostrophes were hurt during the making of this diatribe...

Forgive me; but by the time this stuff is available we shall be out of the first place and will have made over the second task to the civvies.

The boots - by the way - look as though they might have a tread,: any FOD hazard here?

Bl**dy hell - a gestation period of around 20 years finally comes to an end. :eek: No wonder there are still concerns over procurement processes...

I remember staffing the STF for `extreme cold weather flying boots` during the Kosovo push. A boot fitted with a breathable sock insert was chosen (You may think Gortex but I couldn't possibly comment) as the most suitable.

When the Kosovo thing finished, (and in summer), my office received an Incident Report (IR) from a unit just west of the A1 near Stamford, stating that the said boot was too hot. Apparently, the problem was so bad that the wearer took unilateral action to alleviate the problem. He cut the membrane out of the boot.....

Priceless!

PS: I`m sorry but the Mk 4 CWJ the lady is shown wearing (above) just looks awful - A real mess..

Oldmansquipper, that's because it's a MK.3, also wearing green flying gloves (long gone) and a Mk.14 coverall (also long departed). The MK.4 looks just about as bad, but the material is better (for those on Byphoon, it's almost the same as your winterland jacket but without the balaclava.). A man in the pub said that the boots will go to Tucano first, then others. Rumours of a special version for the Hawk..with flaps:E

When the "film" was being shot in the 60's ... this lot lobbed into RAF Manston. Some years later I heard a story that an ex RAF BoB Pilot had apparently shouted (partly tongue in cheek) "Get that filth off my airfield" over the R/T :suspect:

Stitchbitch; I stand corrected -Mk 3 it is.of course. although in my day the Mk 3 did not have those black zips - nice shiny ones then, and the lady , had she turned up at a certain North Wales Training establishment in the 90s, would have had the pockets ripped from her Mk 14 flying suit as part of a super OM bar-room jolly jape...a real "ripping yarn" if ever there was one!:hmm:

As for the AEA user trials that went on back then - they could be guaranteed to delay any project ad nauseum and the length of delay was usually in proportion to the number of aircrew involved. I.E. 1 aircrew person = 2 opinions, 2 aircrew peeps = 4 opinions and so on...;);)

Mind you, if we (as engineers) wanted anything delayed we would send the file on round robin to the Air Staffs for comment ..Lost for months:)
