Another great thread. It did occur to me to wonder where it might go when I saw you'd opened it with a Cecil Rhodes quote.

St. George is also the Patron Saint of Catalunya, Georgia (as in Tbilisi, not Atlanta), Beirut, and Palestine.

I think he is a few other patronages under his belt but the above are the ones I remember.

In Catalunya, where he is San Jordi, it is celebrated by buying your loved one a rose or a book.

There is a beautiful Rhodes monument park overlooking Cape Town.

Interestingly, in Chennai the main police station was extended. Instead of continuing the classical façade they opted for utilitarian, non-colonial, square concrete pillars.

There was a public outcry and I believe they had to replace them with classical ones.

ps. St George is really big in Genoa too - a city covered with his flags. They told me there that King Richard II (The Lionheart) had been wrecked on the ironbound coat nearby (San Fruttuoso) returning from a crusade and was so astonished and grateful at his miraculous survival that he declared he would adopt the local saint as England's own, which turned out to be St George.

I doubt this is more than a local folk tale though it is a nice one.

Just inspired to do something to day ... first day of really good Wx here in the South East, had just walked the dog and stood to attention as my neighbour raised the flag this morning :ok:

Now off for a beer at the local village Pub :ok:

On the slopes of Table Mountain above the University and one of the few places on the Peninsula from which the Indian and Atlantic Oceans can be seen. I took a US American tour group up there once and the group arsehole corrected me when I pointed out the Indian Ocean, he said it was the Pacific.

I think that that so-called quote about slave labour and dumping manufactured goods was dreamt up by some left wing anti-colonialist fluffy.

Fareastdriver I also think that, but I've often heard it and it appears on a number of sites as a quote from CJR.

According to Wikipedia ... (Yeah I know ....) The wording in this quote is disputed and original source is unknown.

I read somewhere over the last couple of days that the Prime Minister is proud to be English.

Since when has the name "Cameron" been English?

Since when was the Turkish St George English; or the German Royal Family, or the French three lions and cross of St George...?
