Proud to be English

Quote for the Day ...

Cecil John Rhodes (1853-1902)

"Ask any man what nationality he would prefer to be, and ninety nine out of a hundred will tell you that they would prefer to be Englishmen".

Celebrating St George's Day :ok:

Best ...

Coff, we are flying the flag.

I wonder if Rhodes's survey was skewed and he only asked Englishmen, and a Scot?

Or perhaps it was one of those statistics made up on the spot like 93.5% of them are :)

Courtney Mil 23rd Apr 2013 08:41

And we shall be keeping our currency to ourselves, apparently.

blaireau 23rd Apr 2013 09:05

I shall be current again tonight!

Be England what she will. With all her faults, she is my country still.

Charles Churchill (1731-1764) - english poet

Remember that you are an Englishman, and have consequently won first prize in the lottery of life.
The man who founded one of only a very small number of countries that took the name of the founder.

He also (allegedly) said :

We must find new lands from which we can easily obtain raw materials and at the same time exploit the cheap slave labor that is available from the natives of the colonies. The colonies would also provide a dumping ground for the surplus goods produced in our factories.

The colonies would also provide a dumping ground for the surplus goods produced
in our factories
and, I reckon we might be able to get away with some toxic waste too.

Coff,

Another great thread. It did occur to me to wonder where it might go when I saw you'd opened it with a Cecil Rhodes quote.

Capetonian 23rd Apr 2013 09:53

St. George is also the Patron Saint of Catalunya, Georgia (as in Tbilisi, not Atlanta), Beirut, and Palestine.

I think he is a few other patronages under his belt but the above are the ones I remember.

In Catalunya, where he is San Jordi, it is celebrated by buying your loved one a rose or a book.

smujsmith 23rd Apr 2013 09:56

Sir Winston Churchill

"There is a forgotten, nay almost forbidden word, which means more to me than any other. That word is England."

Unfortunately becoming more true as years go by. A very happy St George's day to all old comrades and contributors to PPRUNE Military Forum. Don't forget today is the traditional day to collect your Dandelions for wine making purposes !

There is a beautiful Rhodes monument park overlooking Cape Town.

Interestingly, in Chennai the main police station was extended. Instead of continuing the classical façade they opted for utilitarian, non-colonial, square concrete pillars.

There was a public outcry and I believe they had to replace them with classical ones.

If England was what England seems
And not the England of our dreams
But only putty, brass and paint
How quick we'd drop her.
But she ain't

I think most British folk will know who wrote that. Well, there's only one contender for verse like that isn't there?

ps. St George is really big in Genoa too - a city covered with his flags. They told me there that King Richard II (The Lionheart) had been wrecked on the ironbound coat nearby (San Fruttuoso) returning from a crusade and was so astonished and grateful at his miraculous survival that he declared he would adopt the local saint as England's own, which turned out to be St George.

I doubt this is more than a local folk tale though it is a nice one.

There is a beautiful Rhodes monument park overlooking Cape Town.

On the slopes of Table Mountain above the University and one of the few places on the Peninsula from which the Indian and Atlantic Oceans can be seen. I took a US American tour group up there once and the group arsehole corrected me when I pointed out the Indian Ocean, he said it was the Pacific.

There is also a statue of Rhodes in the Gardens in Cape Town :http://cache2.allpostersimages.com/p...ohn-rhodes.jpg

Fareastdriver 23rd Apr 2013 11:23

I think that that so-called quote about slave labour and dumping manufactured goods was dreamt up by some left wing anti-colonialist fluffy.

Capetonian 23rd Apr 2013 11:27

Fareastdriver I also think that, but I've often heard it and it appears on a number of sites as a quote from CJR.

According to Wikipedia ... (Yeah I know ....) The wording in this quote is disputed and original source is unknown.

Wwyvern 23rd Apr 2013 12:00

I read somewhere over the last couple of days that the Prime Minister is proud to be English.

Since when has the name "Cameron" been English?

BEagle 23rd Apr 2013 12:03

Just need something fast, noisy and low to come through LFA18 ... the day will be complete...;)
No problemo.....

melmothtw 23rd Apr 2013 12:20

Since when has the name "Cameron" been English?
Since when was the Turkish St George English; or the German Royal Family, or the French three lions and cross of St George...?

Courtney Mil 23rd Apr 2013 12:27

Oh, Lord. There's always one, isn't there? Since when did we care?

KiloB 23rd Apr 2013 12:30

Rhodes

Hey
Hands off CJR; he gave up being English and became a Rhodesian! ;)
