Well I agree that she instigated the military salary; and I respect her for that (it changed my life back then) but as for the rest of the postings - what on earth have they got to do with military aviation?

It's a forum FOR the professionals, not about aviation. We can presumably post on any subject we and our fellow pros might be interested in. Look at other threads: Caption comp; Argie President; Sgt Hamilton. There is no shortage of interest in this one.

Democratic senators are blocking a U.S. Senate resolution honoring the life and work of the late Margaret Thatcher. A Senate resolution to honor Lady Thatcher was supposed to pass last night. However, Democrats have a hold on the resolution.

To refuse to honor a woman of such great historical and political significance, who was deeply loyal to the United States, is petty and shameful. One truly has to wonder, what is it about Lady Thatcher that gives them pause? Her unfaltering commitment to freedom? Or perhaps the way she fought for individual liberty and limited government?

Thatcher and Reagan convinced millions that they were fighting for the good life. And they delivered. The damning sin that the left cannot forgive them for is that their policies, at home and abroad, succeeded more often than they failed. But they didn't convince with mere empty words, with the same tired slogans that stood for nothing and opposed nothing and advocated nothing. They did not skulk in on the heels of consultants who made them seem as nonthreatening as possible. Instead they made it clear that they were here to fight against the forces of decay, the ideologies of terror and the sense of mortality that comes to every great nation in the hour of its decline.

Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan are dead now, but in life they won a victory over the seeming deaths of their nations. They came in the hour of twilight and they stepped down with the sunrise. Their victories were temporary but they showed that leaders can stand against decline and breathe new life when most of the experts believe that all is lost and that we must learn to accept that. They showed us that with conviction and courage we can resist the inevitable.

All this is, of course, lost on the left wing socialist rabble.

How many of them supported, raised and donated funds for the IRA?

The Today programme on BBC Radio 4 this morning discussed and played excerpts from the then Mrs Tatcher's interview on Soviet Television in 1987. Whilst I knew of it, it was not something I had heard or seen before. How remarkable. Gorbachev had instructed three of his best political debaters to pull her apart. Instead, she went on the attack and, befitting her reputation, put up a pretty impressive performance.



Of course, having posted it it's now clear to me that you might need to speak Russian to get it. Shame we can't hear the interpretation as we could on radio this morning. Anyone find a version with some English in it? Or maybe some of the lefties here might be able to translate?

The reality though is that most of the lefties have never set foot in a communist country and have no real understanding of what an evil and pernicious system it is.

Well, SOSL is right. It is a very high-interest item though, so maybe OK as a one off? How about we post some aviation stuff about the Falklands to make a tenuous link. Oh, no. That would bring us back to the bloody Sea Harrier and Sharkey again. Let's not.

The lefties (and those on the right) should read The File by Timothy Garton Ash. It details his research into the Stasi's files gathered on him when he was living in East Berlin as a post-graduate research student. The efforts by the East German state to tap into everyone's thoughts and actions are horrendous.

Saw a clip of the Falklands parade on the News the other night - pretty sure it was Sharkey leading the left-hand file of the RN contingent

Mr Hall added: "I have spoken at some length with the director of radio, Graham Ellis, and Radio 1 controller Ben Cooper. We have agreed that we won't be playing the song in full - rather treating it as a news story and playing a short extract to put it in context."

I totally agree. I viewed the interview on BBC News this afternoon and I thought he was an absolute disgrace even the interviewer looked extremely uncomfortable and he is employed by the corporation! What a weak bunch of wimps we have running the BBC. If they play it perhaps we could withold our licence fee? A petition perhaps:E

Driving home today, I must have heard the BBC's policy on "Ding Dong..." mentioned about 15 times on the radio news bulletins. I don't get it - if the corporation really thinks that the campaign is in dubious taste, the best thing to do would be to make no reference to the campaign at all, play the song in its 54-second entirety in the Number 1 slot on Sunday without adding any amplifying comment, and move on. Practically no airtime devoted to the childish stunt, compared to the blanket coverage being given today...

Mind you we still celebrate the burning of the last chap that tried to make a difference.....

After the deplorable actions of the few of late over Maggies demise, the lunatics are truly running the asylum.. If I was the family I would tell the Country to stick the funeral and bury her in the Falklands, at least there she will receive the respect she deserves.

MT was a great PM in my view but she did not instigate the military salary. That was instigated by a Labour government in or around 1970. The basic premise was to pay a normal salary to all and remove the myriad of dated allowances such as marriage allowance. It also introduced things like food and accommodation charges and the personal contribution for H2D . It was also the origin of the term "beanstealing".
