SIR – On Sunday, the Swordfish flypast was cancelled because it was raining. In my day, on the Arctic convoy runs to Russia, we flew off in 60-knot snowstorms in the night, with the ship pitching 20 to 30ft, and rolling 20 to 30 degrees, and we didn’t have a river such as the Thames to navigate by. Lt-Cdr Bob Selley RNR (retd) Exeter, Devon |
Would have been good to see the Stringbag fly through Tower Bridge. :D

The Lt-Cdr (retd) has probably never flown over London, doesn't understand the rules appertaining and he certainly didn't have high rise buildings to worry about flying at low level over the sea. Sheesh, why am I defending the Navy....must be getting soft in my old age :O |
Thanks to airsound for the earlier post. It's 1745, and the local paper has announced online that the Reds have cancelled the Southampton display.
With a cloud-base of 100 feet, I respect their decision. I did a staff continuation training trip in a Venture motor-glider with a bloke on a ground tour who 'normally' drove a Tornado. He did a stall-turn, in cloud, with a turn & slip, ASI, and altimeter for reference. However, we were one aeroplane. It's a bit much asking the Reds to formate seven aircraft in IMC! |
Only a pity they didn't fly as a Diamond 9. I believe that the two extra pilots making up the 9 for flypasts this season are Red 8 (Dave Davis) and Red 10 (Mike Ling), not the Wg Cdr RAFAT. |
A2QFI,
inherited dynastic power She has no power to speak of but, that aside, she is worth all the Prime Ministers and Presidents across the Globe together! Long may she reign over us indeed! Foldie;) |
Interesting photo in the Telegraph of the 9 ship Reds from above over Buckingham Palace. Not something I have seen before.

Wow, thanks for those, 4Nov - amazing station-keeping by the Hurricane.....

Thank you :ok: They are superb photos. |
In the second of the two pics, is the Hurricane hidden by the Lancaster? On the TV coverage, it was behind the Lancaster. I assume that the perspective from the camera ship has obscured it, as it didn't seem so far behind that it would be out of shot.
|
Isn't that the wing of the Hurricane immediately behind the trailing edge of the Lanc?
|
Quire right! For Power read Influence. perhaps even that is a bit OTT!

nice pics
Great pics – good to see the guys pulling it out of the bag on a tough day.
In the defense of the Navy the weather was slightly better than Sunday when theirs was cancelled! We got a great view Sunday though of 3 Merlins I can only assume were on their way to try for the Thames. They went straight over the top of the village picnic in the park - nice and low and great formation. Anyone know where they were from so I can say thanks? everyone at home now thinks I still have contacts and arranged it. |
A great show guys..
Particularly like the bit when Liz (God Bless Her) looked up to Wills and said (If my lip reading is correct) "...Listen....." as the BBMF went over:D I guess she likes the sound of Merlins, too. (Er....and Griffons?) |
I did always think that the display line in London was straight down The Mall, and thus the track running in overhead Redbridge and Victoria Park. The overhead shot of the Arrows, however, shows them heading a good 10-15 degrees more southerly than this.
|
Well done to all those servicemen and women who took part in the celebrations - you did the Queen proud!
I'd just like to add a link to the best version of the National Anthem that I've ever heard; why not listen and see if you agree. |
Judging from the in-cockpit BBMF footage (here) the flypast line is directly along the Mall. The apparent skew in the photographs from above is probably due to drift angle (ie crosswind).
Slightly concerned that the Lanc captain appears to be unsure about the deconfliction plan just as they pass over the Palace! |
It was spot on. Strong crosswind from the south. Picture taken from a helo 1 mile west of the palace after the team flew over
