Splendid Chap that you are ;)

Here's a bit of late 70's nostalgia for those that experienced their first flight in a Chipmunk as an Air Cadet :ok:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=quAzZbNEX98 Mind you ... I'd like to find a copy of the 'original' AEF Briefing Film which was shot at RAF White Waltham. Contrast now the fact (and quite correctly) that Air Cadets who fly AEF in the Tutor are properly attired with full Flying Clothing, Bonedome/Visor and Flying Gloves. |

John Eacott, your Prentice looks like it might have been G-AOMF which was owned by Surrey & Kent FC at Biggin in '61.
|
I did a RN flying scholarship at the Surrey and Kent in 1964 and had a ride in the Prentice with an old, to an 18 year old, chap.
If memory serves we did a couple of circuits. IIRC it had pneumatic brakes. I am still surprised how small the prop seemed to be for such a large aircraft. |
The two Chipmunks I mentioned previously were/are WK565 and WD373, taken over Old Sarum during Summer camp in 1970.
For some reason I can't get this photograph to upload via Flickr?! I hope this info is of interest? KR FOK |
Just helping our good friend Wander00 post a couple of pics of the 'La Rochelle' Chipmunk he recently took. The airframe was WZ877 (CI-0915 : DHB.f.805)

Brilliant Nutty ... Many thanks :ok:
I assume you were in the right place, right time on the ground to take the pic during an aerobatic sequence ? |
Going over the top of a loop :)

Lovely picture

That is a very nice picture Nutty :)

Thanks all.
Have tweaked it :) |
Not quite the correct forum I know, but does anyone please have photos/details of RMAF Chipmunks? Did they carry underwing serials and if they did, how were they presented? I'm aware of the RMAF Museum example, but have some misgivings as to its accuracy.
Thank you. |
This is for NigeF51D
I'm looking at my father's logbook for 17th August 1976 at Summer Camp St Mawgan which shows that he flew WP914 that day. He also flew WZ847 during that camp. So it looks like there's a 50% chance he flew you that day. WZ 847 is G-CPMK which attended the celebration and WP914 is F-AZSM. During his 25 year AEF Chipmunk career 1951/76, my father flew forty six different aircraft and must have taken thousands of cadets for their first flights. They wouldn't have known, of course, that , only a few years earlier, he was the Captain of Wellingtons and Liberators. I have my own 414 from the early 60's and did my PPL on Chipmunks at Elstree in 1965. Wonderful memories. |
Many thanks chipnostalgia, that helps. I did manage to record the take-off time as 1500 for a duration of 20 minutes. Does that narrow it down?
Wonderful memories indeed! Nige |
Hello Nige
His logbook has two entries for that day ; Self.......Cadets 1hr.45 and 2.10. Presumably before and after lunch. If I remember rightly , 20mins was the usual flight time. Pleased to be of help A few pages ago in this thread there is a photo of WK576 at Roborough, Plymouth, on 11th February 1967. My father is in the front seat. I'm finding these bits of various jigsaws interesting and hopefully will be able to fill in more details in the future Best wishes Chipnostalgia |
Nutty ...
Many thanks for the refresh on your pics ... Outstanding :ok: This would appear to be the cockpit video of that display ... Must have been a small camera on the port wing tip though :8 https://mobile.twitter.com/_JonHiggi...37396826107904 Best ... Coff. |
Gents:
There's been some activity on the "History and Nostalgia" Forum concerning my earlier query about RMAF Chipmunks. There's also an explanation regarding the "Shipmunk": http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...psytj34zzb.jpg |

Might be worth swapping a Tweet with the TUDM ... https://mobile.twitter.com/airforcen...23119983931392 https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CakgSbCUEAAc6DI.jpg Coff. Mind you ... Parked with Fap Down := |
Hi Chipnostalgia, many thanks for the further update. As we probably will not be able to narrow it down any more, I'll put WP914 down as a probable for that sortie. It is nice to see that both a/c survived, as have all the others that I've had the pleasure of flying in.
Cheers, Nige |
Thanks for that, Coff.
We'll try the Tweet address; they certainly don't respond to letters! Interesting they say "Four Chipmunks commenced service on 5 May 1957" - I have WD287 (became the RMAF's FM1022) allocated to the MAAF on 15 Feb 1957, and the RMAF ended up with seven Chipmunks, all of which came from the MAAF. |

Cranwell's Chipmunks
In recent days I've seen photos of two different Chipmunks recently restored/repainted as pre-DayGlo RAFC aircraft, i.e. overall silver with the trimmed blue fuselage band. One has the yellow wing bands while the other hasn't (and looks distinctly naked without them). However the few B&W photos I have of RAFC Chipmunks prior to the application of DayGlo markings don't show the wing surfaces clearly. Looking at the "The Sky is Ours" film ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uD0r0ghKF4) it seems as though the yellow bands are absent, while the colour of the film is generally poor the underside of WP868/JM is clearly shown (at 12:21) without the yellow wing bands.
Does anyone have any photos showing the wing bands (or their absence)? Am I correct in assuming that RAFC Chipmunk didn't carry them (odd as that seems)? Thanks. |
Wander00 might be able to help here Dora-9 as he flew the Chipmunk at RAFC with my old Boss John Shelton ... Worth a try :ok:
|
CS - Cor, that takes me back a bit. It is a long time ago, but I don't think there were blue wing bands. Unfortunately I lost all my photos along with the house clearance post-divorce! 89 Entry have quite a busy web site - someone there might be able to help
Just looked on 89 Entry web site and WB562 does not have bands on the wings, just round the fuselage |
|
Wander00 and Nutloose:
Thanks indeed for the response. I wasn't querying blue wing bands, but whether yellow wing bands appeared before the advent of the DayGlo markings. Looking at that evocative Dave Welch photo of WB654 and friends, I can't see any evidence of a wing band there. What keeps bugging me though is that it appears illogical to delete them on a training aircraft... Cheers! |
Think/look before responding, Dora!
Looking again, the Chipmunk has the later DayGlo strips (just visible ahead of the fuselage roundel), which is confirmed by the c.1966 dating of the photo. Unfortunately then it's outside the period that I'm querying (pre-1959 when everybody else's Chipmunks were overall silver with yellow bands). Still scratching my head... |
RAF Chipmunks.
I left the RAF in 1947 and joined the newly constituted RAFVR at Fazackerley, Liverpool in 1950. At that time We had to go to Wolverhampton to get two weeks flying Tiger Moths. Lord Shinwell inspected all the Reserve units in Merseyside and arranged for us to have our own aircraft, Tigers, and to fly from Hooton Park. I rejoined the RAF in February 1951. and the week before I went to Hooton Park so that, when asked "When did you last fly?" I could say, "Last Week. When I arrived at Hooton Park the Tigers had gone, and we were reaquipped with Chipmunks. I was checked out and managed to get in five hours on a new aircraft!! The numbers were 307 and 309. I hope this helps. I never flew a Chipmunk again.
|
Welcome Oremside28 ... I'll have a look later to see if 307 and 309 are still airworthy :ok:

Great pics Roving ... Thanks for sharing with us :ok:
The QFI's clearly 'coveted' their Irvin flying boots ... However I think I'm right in saying that they became prohibited in the Chipmunk for fear of the boot getting stuck under the rudder bar during spinning ... But I could be wrong ;) |
also in evidence the UAS Pilot Budgie Badge and the fantastic leather helmets and goggles................ terrific pics
