Presume membership is not limited to those who were involved with the Kipper fleet days - suspect there are still plenty around who flew or serviced the AEW Shackleton. Or have your membership rules changed?:rolleyes:

Many of us who flew the AEW are still getting therapy for it. Maybe we don't want to be reminded of it.

There's a clue in the name "Shackleton Association" MR/AEW.........still Shacks:ok:

I'm attempting to piece together memories, and stories of my late father William (Bill) Snowdon who served as an MAEop for many years on both Shackleton and Nimrods at bases including Ballykelly St Mawgan Malta and Kinloss. Would greatly appreciate any assistance from those who would have known him or could point me in the direction of those who might remember him.
Is the Growler open to siblings or just retired serving personel?

Hi Steve,

You asked for memories of the RAF service of your late father Bill Snowdon. I served with Bill on 120 Sqn at RAF Kinloss in the early 1970's. I was the Air Electonics Officer on a crew when Bill (who was than a Master AEOp) was the lead wet operator after we had converted from the Shackleton to the Nimrod MR1. Bill was a very reliable and competent acoustics operator and I very much valued his expertise as a member of my team. I remember him being on the crew when we carried out the first round the world trip by a Nimrod - we staged through Canada then flew across the Pacific to Hawaii, Guam and on to Singapore and after a short break returned to UK via Gan (Maldives) and Cyprus.

I lost track of Bill after I was posted as an instructor on the Nimrod OCU at St Mawgan. However I do recall meeting him again in the mid 1980's when I was AEO Leader on 42 Sqn (Nimrod MR2). Bill was then working for the Underwater Acoustics section of Marconi (based at Rochester I believe) and paid a visit to the squadron together with Peter Duckworth who was also a retired AEO working for Marconi.

IIRC the Mk 2 Shack was in the AEW role for longer than it was in the ASW role. Granted there were far more ASW ac and far more aircrew.

I can confirm that Raj is indeed on the 777 with BA - have seen him down-route somewhere the other side of the iso-dollar line! :ok:

It's good to see the oldies set in print. Friend of mine used 'hecopleter' and 'feno - menal' which Mrs PN had always thought I made up :)

I seem to remember that hicopleter was a well-known typo in AP 129 for a while.
