This theme appears on the Rumours and News forum with regular monotony and generally achieves the same response as it is doing here. The discriminator appears to be age and experience, but that too, is a sweeping generalization.

With experience comes the realization that being a pilot is a tremendous opportunity to do something the majority of people will never get to do. The selection process for Military pilots has the unintended side affect of allowing some people to believe their own publicity, but most are grateful for the chance to do something both fun and rewarding. I like to believe that very few Military pilots fail to understand that every hour spent at the sharp end is the result of many, many, hours of dedicated professionalism by all those support personnel in the background. My personal experience has been that those who do understand the scale of the teamwork involved are far less likely to feel the need to announce their aircrew status, those that don't will be flashing the Breitling and Ray-Ban Aviators for evermore.

There are always good times to announce your flying credentials, and of course bad times. Good times may include overhearing the Chief Bridesmaid announcing she's not going home until she's banged a pilot, bad times include when the Crew Chief comes in at 4pm on a Friday afternoon looking for a 2 hour ground run. A true aviation professional will step up to both tasks with good grace and a winning smile. It's like leadership, if you need to tell people you are in charge, you're probably not in charge at all.

By the way with regard to the comment about a journo being on here I would be perfectly happy to be denied permission to join PPrune and thus not to be able to post messages as indeed I'm not a pilot. It would be nice to be able to view the forum however as I do find it enjoyable. But I couldn't grumble even if this was not allowed as afterall as I said I'm not a pilot so if the forum mods want to do that would be understandable as that is what this forum was set up for.

Speaking generally, not just about the Military Aircrew Forum: what about people who come on to PPRuNe claiming to be journalists, but demonstrate wobbly syntax and seem unwilling to offer much in the way of punctuation?

RoyHudd 15th Sep 2008 10:22

They are journalists.

Means they are probably journalists and as likely to be in the visual media. The cruncher is their lack of any understanding of aviation. :}

I am not of course, in the latter statement, refering to those known journalists who have proper syntax and knowledge of aviation. :)

They might be journalists in the visual media, but in the UK they are probably Grauniad journalists.

Looking through the threads I think any objective reviewer would quickly conclude that were only pilots permitted to post then the expertise to answer/discuss would be sorely limited.

Whether it be a thread on passengers standing up on scheduled flights without the input of flight attendants; discussions on the design of CVF without engineers; or discussions on flight separation rules without ATCOs, many threads would be very much the poorer if only pilots were allowed to comment.

However I am not a pilot so my opinion is irrelevant (Twos in got it right though)

Obviously Chinook Pilots can't post without clearance and Voice Marshalling from their Crewmen?

Clear above and Behind, Steady, Post is good

Gingers

If it wasn't for ground crew you'd have nothing to be a pilot with!

:ok:

If it wasn't for stackers, dusties and loggies, ground crew would have nothing to spanner w**k with!

Of course, you could swell the ranks of people like 1.4G who don't own up to any particular specialisation (Seriously 1.4G, VC10 Air Steward is not that bad).

Or, you could have a separate forum for C130 guys who want to talk about ovens, and how the captain takes his coffee, or how they really load their own aircraft and need 15 sets of FR CS95 so they can look like the troops they dropped off at the APOD.

Wessex Boy

I don't see how the Chinook is different to the Puma or Merlin in that respect?

Is it still holding true that VC10 Loadmasters are not allowed to put power on the Aircraft?
Is it true that they're no longer allowed to call 'stop' (or abort, or whatever phrase the VC10 uses)? Oh hang on, they never were, but I do believe it happened in the dim and distant....:}

If it wasn't for civilian pilots (ex-mil or not) you'd have no-one to provide charter for a huge proportion of pax AT!!!

cornish-stormrider 19th Sep 2008 10:02

Helllp.

Can someone please remind me how to add AIDUKFUSS or whatever his name is to an ignore list??

I had hoped the troll had left us.

Oh, and GBZ, us engineers seem to manage ok. we just rob something from another frame. As for tools, we all have leatherman's and maglites. What more do we need??

Ignore is counter intuitive.

Click his name. Select Add to Buddy List. A new window opens. In the Control Panel on the left, at the bottom, is a buddy/ignore list. Click this. The Add window changes to an Add/Ignore window, his name is highlighted, click Save - job done.

Tourist 19th Sep 2008 16:13

Do you not find that ignoring somebody is more annoying even than just having to read their posts? Half an argument is still irritating surely?

Pontius Navigator 19th Sep 2008 16:36

Tourist, not sure I follow your argument. :) if there are just 2 in the argument and one is ignored then no argument. In a thread with many contributors the one that is ignored will probably not add anything of value anyway.

If someone is prone to overly long diatribes then they eat up screen real estate - that is one I have blocked. Or if someone is plain annoying.

Now occasionally there may be a gem, often someone will cut and paste so you see the comment anyway.

"My point is very few are actually started by currently serving Aircrew (or ground crew, mustn't forget them) so maybe a change of the title at the top is in order".
You may find that most of us "frontline" aircrew are too busy doing our job to post regularily on here!!!

Although from the rumours I heard today there may be a few dozen "fag chariot" drivers and rear seaters with a bit of spare time on their hands soon!!!!

6onthebleeptest 24th Sep 2008 05:51

Thanx 4 the SP 1.4g..aye shod no better havin' don ISS!!!!:ok:

Is "banter" not a thing of the past now that the "fun police" have introduced PC training?
