A young RNZAF pilot once brought his Jet provost back to Ohakea with the landing light u/s. Investigation showed that the housing was full of pine needles. And no, it was not a low-level tasking :E
A long, embarrassing and expensive interview with the CO followed.

Never mind, he rose to be a Wingco & CO of his own squadron, then jumped to the RAAF where, I think, he's now a GPCAPT. :ok:

Now I'm sure somewhere along the line I read a magazine article about a hunter having a dune-strike somewhere hot & sandy (oman or similar?) and returning home safely... that's low!

The Buccaneer airframe was renowned for its ruggedness - at least in earlier days - I recall an S2 parked in 736 hangar ( mid 60's) - it had hit a power line ( 1 off those strung between pylons somewhere in the NE of Scotland) and said cable had trashed the Blue Parrot and then got stretched across both intakes ( leaving suitable indentations on both stainless steel intake edges) before it presumably went 'twang' - both Speys had strands of wire wrapped around the LP stages - and I mean a lots of strands - After the wire strike the aircraft recovered safely to Lossie. !!

Kiwi Grey - nope that young pilot is in the RAAF, but he isn't a GPCAPT. Still a Wingco, but he has a Sqn command again!

And then there was the Bucc on the first Red Flag (1977) that took out the VHF whip aerial on one of the threat simulator cabins on the range...

And in 1971, the Phantom FGR2 (XT910, I think) that landed at Leuchars after flying through a wood. Large chunks of tree embedded in the leading edge of the wings and one engine shifted rearward by several inches. Did the pilot's career no harm, he went on to reach air rank.

Believe the nav got the blame for not telling his pilot he was about to fly through a tree! At a dining-in night at a secret base in Lincolnshire, some time later, BAe presented the pilot with a bird's nest mounted on a small plinth. They had spent a considerable amount of time repairing the F4 in question "after a bird strike". Unfortunately, the bird had been sitting in the tree at the time.

Kitwe, you're right, the nav did get the blame, but then, he wasn't destined for higher things.

Does anyone have a link to the footage of the Bucc's disappearing behind the terrain at Red Flag as seen through the ground defence visual tracking (I think)?

I remember it from the good old BBC news as a sprog and would love to see it again.

I am hoping that the previously mentioned concerns were unfounded, you used to be one of the troops!

And at the end of the day the photies posted by those above are well represented in previous threads. I am happy to re-post as well as I have some originals and some copies of the SOAF pix.
