New RAF base

Engineers from a previously undisclosed RAF base have been assembling a Typhoon museum exhibit.

Two unknown bases, surely - where's Conningsby? Anywhere near Coningsby?

Engineers from RAF Conningsby and RAF St Athens assembled the aircraft
Be fair though - you can't expect the supposed voice of the RAF to spell the names of airbases correctly...

Jeez,
Words fail me. OK there are typos and there are typos, but this does appear to take the biscuit........

Basics chaps, BASICS

Must be a reflection on the EDUCATION, EDUCATION, EDUCATION that was trumpeted all those years ago.

If an Engineer is expected to have those BASIC spelling skills, then surely a 'professional' journalist should have them.

Although to be fair, we are all human, and we can all make these mistakes, occasioanlly. This is a new editorial team, with teething problems, in a new unfamiliar situation etc. Although, if professional, it shouldn't happen at all, it is understandable. If this is happening three months down the line then, and only then, may I consider cancelling my subscription!

(Feel free to rip my grammer and spelling apart, I am an Engineer and I probably lack those basic skills mentioned above, although I do not claim to be a professional journalist!)

(As if you need an invetation anyway.:suspect:)

Typhoon museum exhibit.

40 years too early

Surely..........?

airsound 5th Feb 2008 05:59

Do you mean 'new RAF stations'?

harrogate 5th Feb 2008 08:30

No.

No I don't.

In the same way St Athens is just down the road from St Athan. :ugh:

NutherA2 5th Feb 2008 08:50

Or perhaps our hard pressed engineers are getting suport from the Hellenic Air Force?

The Helpful Stacker 5th Feb 2008 09:30

No.

No I don't.
Members of the Royal Air Force are generally posted to stations, a piece of terminology we take from our Royal Navy Air Service roots.

The term 'base' (taken from that rounders type game the colonials play) is a term which unfortunately is creeping into usage throughout out own Armed Forces.

harrogate 5th Feb 2008 09:32

That may well be true.

But it doesn't mean that I meant to say 'Station'.

Erm, bzzzzzzzzzzzt!

Maybe they're allowed the opportunity to edit their posts too!

27mm 5th Feb 2008 09:46

I seem to remember them being called "Camps" as well (Thorney Island was referred to as one), but I don't suppose you could use that term any more in our PC world.

harrogate 5th Feb 2008 09:50

Au contraire, Mr 27mm.

The PC police would probably say it's offensive to suggest that the word 'camp' is un-PC.

Who makes up PC guidelines anyway? I always imagine it to be a panel similar to the Eggheads. It's probably the least productive department in all of government (and that's really saying something), because they'll all be worried about offending each other with their suggestions.

No, its probably a computer translation error.

Babelfish into Welsh and back into English.:)

Gainesy 5th Feb 2008 09:57

Well your efforts are not in vain Harrogate, I note that the spelling has been corrected.

While we aren't on the subject, what is this "standing up" :yuk: of squadrons nonsense?

Nonsense indeed but it is CAS Speak after all.

I guess some smartarse decided if a sqn could have a stand down then it can also have a stand up.

Wader2 5th Feb 2008 11:09

I see the page on the website has a link to the New Years Honours List 2007.

Now would that be the New Year's Eve Honours List of 31 Dec 2007 or the New Year's Honours list of 13 months ago?

Archimedes 5th Feb 2008 11:48

Come, come, Wader. This is the RAF's official website....

...so obviously the list is 13 months out of date.
