New google images

Just checked Google Earth and found new imagery of Lincolnshire. Work in my garden suggests less than a year old and lack of work in a neighbours suggests about March 06. Coningsby is clear with the old ATC in the process of demolition but no aircraft on the disperal. The Wash ranges now stand out clearly with the tide out.

ZH875 12th Apr 2007 18:16

Work around my area, would indicate that the photos are about 2 years old.

gearontheglide 12th Apr 2007 18:59

First time I have seen an image of 'Chez Glide' Lack of neighbours conservatory leads me to March/April 06

STANDTO 12th Apr 2007 19:50

Conningsby isn't on Google Maps But Cranditz is

- who parked all those cars on the No 1 Mess parade ground. They'd have had a hissy fit in my day!

Mind you, I did drive across the front of CHOM parade ground one night, four up, after we had been sent to polish Whittle Hall

STANDTO 12th Apr 2007 19:56

- and what are all those cars doing parked within 25m of a building? Don't they know there's a war on?

The Swinging Monkey 12th Apr 2007 20:11

STANDTO
Coningsby is as clear as a bell on my Google, as is Waddo, Scampton and Cranners, so not sure whats up with your kit?

I think it must have been mid 2005, and probably during the Lincs show (check out the show ground)

Either way, some great images

last one tonight....promise!

GPMG 12th Apr 2007 20:53

Crikey, the image of my house must be less than a week old. We only moved in last November and the image shows my car on the drive but with my neighbours Parasol out in the garden which I don't recall seeing until last weekend, because I had remarked about what a gopping colour it was (Orange).

GPMG 12th Apr 2007 20:58

Swinging Monkey, it's this I believe.

And I thought it was for the new wider, fatter navy:}

Yeller_Gait 12th Apr 2007 21:18

The picture of my house on the north side of Lincoln shows the kids trampoline in our back garden, and we got rid of that in September 05. Best guess for the photos is summer 05.

The work on the power lines that cross the A15 is going on. That dates those images from summer 05

Murmansk

Anyone checked out the Typhoon-Class and Akulas alongside in Murmansk and PJ inlet?

Good KUSNETSOV too!

Pie Man 13th Apr 2007 16:33

I would go for the first week in Jul 05. The grass at RAF Waddington shows the airshow had taken place (2/3 Jul 05) and only one marquee left - they had gone by the end of the week (8 Jul 05).

Leaning Tower of Portsmouth

Further to TSMs last set of LL, the join in the photo tiles makes it look like this tower is seriously out of kilter and either the CVS or the ship to the S of her has a serious list!

Or have I just not been drinking enough?

GPMG
Thanks for that.

Daf Hucker 14th Apr 2007 12:11

Pie Man,

The Lincolnshire Show is full flow, which normally happens on the Wed-Fri before the Waddo Air Show, which IIRC was 2/3 Jul in 2005, therefore photos taken 29 Jun -1 Jul 05 (assuming that all the photo that make up the composite were taken on the same day!)

Daf

Pie Man 14th Apr 2007 13:01

Daf,

You are quite right, failed to look at the Lincs Showground. As the display markers went out at about 1100 on the Thu before the airshow and they are not visible, with your info on the Lincs Show it narrows down times to before 1100 on the 30th June or the 29th June.

When was the old tower demolished at Coningsby?, as the Coningsby photo show it being demolished.

P-T 14th Apr 2007 18:34

Just to add my 2p worth. I'd say the jul 2005 is correct.

P-T 14th Apr 2007 20:12

Nothing special, just my recce is a bit rusty. Can anyone tell me what these are?

Looks like an E-1 Tracer, predecessor to the Hawkeye also known as the Stoof with a Roof.

Is this what I think it is in Singapore 1°21'12.87"N 103°54'14.76"E ?

Hastalavista 14th Apr 2007 23:50

Pie Man,

The date of the photos will be a week earlier than you have estimated, making it on 22 or 23 Jun 05.

While Daf is correct about 2/3 Jul being the date of the 2005 Waddo Air Show, they normally start putting the marquees up a good week ahead of the event. With so little in the way of tentage etc erected when the photo was taken there would not be sufficient time to get the rest up before the ac arrived to populate the static, and the photo sessions etc began. In 2005 the Lincolnshire Show was 22/23 Jun and the shadows suggest a time around the middle of the day.

The trampoline in my old MQ is still there - therefore mid 2005

gar170 15th Apr 2007 09:19

If its 2005 why is concorde not at filton it was taken there in 2003 and if you drive up the A38 you can see it by the runway.

Daf Hucker 15th Apr 2007 09:50

Proff Stude,
My old Mum used to say, that if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.
Alternately you could just butt out, nobody has forced you to read this thread!

Looks more like a jigsaw of many different photo runs taken at different times! Didn't realise rapeseed crops were only local to the Bourne area!!

allan907 15th Apr 2007 15:00

So, anybody got a clue as to the use of this place? 53 34 33.18N 1 02 17.76W

It's in the middle of the industrial north, in a mining area and didn't have bugger all to do with RAF Finningley (that I am aware of).

At least the men in black will have a hard time finding me in my present location!

Focks 2 15th Apr 2007 15:27

Re: 53 34 33.18N 1 02 17.76W

According to 'google earth community' it may be an old explosives storage facility for the mining industry.

XV277 15th Apr 2007 15:47

They gradually replace imagery as more up to date or detailed stuff becomes available - the U2 has gone from Fairford for example. And some of the 'more sensitive' locations are fuzzed over now, whereas they weren't on first issue.

Jizman 16th Apr 2007 06:38

Hi all, just found something pretty cool to the west of Huntingdon but can't work out how to get the exact point. The best I can do is - Search this (Haweswater, Huntingdon) and see how long it takes to see it!!

Pontius Navigator 16th Apr 2007 07:01

Bing, could be, and a T* too?

Jiz, interesting markings.

Gainesy 16th Apr 2007 09:30

Have a look at the old RAF Misson; Bloodhound site a few miles east of Finningley. More kit there than in Aldershot.:uhoh:

TabbyCat 16th Apr 2007 10:38

Date of G Earth pictures.

There is an option to turn on the date of the pictures in Google Earth - Within layers right at the bottom of the list tick digital global coverage and you will get an overlay with all the recent pictures. If you click on the + it will list all the years for which there is info.

Well what's this about then?

A similar layout in Anglia too?

52 23 08.03 N 000 43 10.84 E

Don't worry about the black Omega's either, there is open-source info available on both sites.

And no, I don't have a life!

STH

Pontius Navigator 16th Apr 2007 20:48

STH, in the early days there was a presumption of hazard. Rather than risk the aircraft on a main base the storage facilities were located a few miles away. In the USSR it was normally 5 miles away from the base.

green granite 16th Apr 2007 20:50

Aahhhhhhhhhh the "big bucket of sunshine" storage/refurb centres. http://209.85.48.8/html/emoticons/unsure.gif
