Redundancies?????

Has anybody heard any rumours about any forthcoming redundancies defence wide?

Rumours in the North are of cuts to about 35 000 for the RAF. Closure of at least one Scottish base (probably Lossiemouth). Cancellation of major projects etc etc. This must mean major redundancies again.

Most of these will probably be by natural wastage. Poor rewards from the Pay Board along with the Pension issue will ensure a healthy queue for the Discharge Clerk's desk in PSF :hmm:

I would like to think that similar packages as in the 90's would be on offer, but I think they would get the required numbers with offering less:{ A sign of the times Im afraid.

Still Mrs Brat will have it already spent and some more. God bless her:mad:

snafu 5th Feb 2004 21:02

It's nice to see that someone has finally woken up to the RAF's chronic overmanning!

Any chance that this will mean that they all have to start working for a living like the rest of us?:E

TAC2 5th Feb 2004 23:23

overmanning!!!!
you will only find overmanning in SHQ, never on the front line.
I wish we were overmanned, we might be able to get all our leave in, and go on the odd professional course.

I assume you must be a "Civi" now:p :p :p

LTB - concur!

snafu - where are you working that is so overmanned? suggest you keep it quiet otherwise we will all want to work there.

Redundancies

Nav A

Heard the same manning figure of 35000 down South too. Cuts already happening with a certain Wiltshire airbase due to close, a reduction in manning ratio of C130K crews to 1.5/1, early scrapping of tired C130Ks and a sell-on of of useless C130J. Plus the rumour for the few of us staying in that the aircrew retention bonus scheme has been suspended for 2004/2005. Cost-cutting now means that WSOps can change jobs by means of a correspondence course! No 12 month training required for Nimrod rearcrew and it now seems that ex-AEOps can learn how to be SH crewmen from an A$ handout.

Rumours are that there will be no enforced retirements but if there are the package will be substanially less than the one offered to us in the mid 90s.

Would you like fries with that?

cheekeymonkey 6th Feb 2004 21:24

along a similar thread...SNAFU...where in gods name did you get the idea we'ar overmanned from...!? I'm trying desperately not to bite here...!:E I have lads workin for me who did SS2, back to the UK, out on Ex, then out to TELIC 1 for 6 months, back to the UK for 2 months off, then out to TELIC 2 for 4 months... :{

Anyway, rant over...

I've heard we are gonna be cut to 38,000, by 2008...and in my opinion it's all Bulls**t...especially if president Blaire and his crazy gang want us to continue ops as we have seen over the past 3 yrs...! It's madness...literally one step beyond...! :} you sometimes wonder why we put ourselves out so much, only to be trodden on at the first opportunity!

Hey, who's up for a military revolt!!! I am, so long as I get to fire one of those really gucchi big guns that work really well....whaddaya mean we aint got em....!? defence spending cuts meant we got the SLP...!? :{ oh joy....:ouch:

I suspect snafu's comments may have been slightly tongue in cheek folks....:p

The useless C130J? I bow to your obvious experience and knowledge.
Not sure the Ks are that tired either...

Lean years ahead I reckon chaps - get your hours in now while the going's good. Ish.

:ok:

cheekeymonkey 7th Feb 2004 01:04

Yeah the C130 J is just about useless...if your trying to load anything to it...!

Yes, I am a mover, but one who likes to sit on the fence, so I dont dish banter about unnecessarily....!

Anyhoo....the C130 J was procured in a fit and able stae, then we (the RAF Chiefs) decided to save money...by removing the winch supplied by lockheed....and also by removing the soopa doopa yank side guidance syatem...:confused: All this saved a few pennies, initially, until they discovered that they couldn't fit the old kit we were using on the Mk1 and 3s onto the J....no winch, no side-guidance = no real use as a cargo carrier. :{

What did we do!? we bought all the kit that we had removed back of the yanks, for a princely sum!:ok: Now it is doing it's job, just...4 yrs down the line!

Oh, although it does have its limitations....cant tandem para drop from both doors, as the slipstream causes the grunts to whack their heads together just as they 'check canopy'...:uhoh:

Cant load pax to certain areas due to H&S issues (noise resonnance from the props)..:ooh:

Can't para drop pallets from the ramp, as it won't fly slow enough (auto stall recovery or something).... :suspect:

Any way...it cant do a lot of things it is supposed to, and that it's 30 yr old sister can .... I'd like to point out that the procurement board for this white elephant did not have any rear crew/movs membership....! :ok:

If my rant has been inaccurate, pse correct moi! :ouch:

Mr Monkey,
You’re telling me that JATE, or whatever it’s called these days, didn’t have ANY involvement in the process?

Hey ho!

Impiger 7th Feb 2004 01:32

Manning Figures

A more authoritative figure for future manning is around 45,000 down from around 52,000. In fact we were due in any case to fall to around 48,000 so the extra will be very small and easily found through natural wastage. Of course the re-balancing exercise means some trades and branches will fall further (FJ Navs?) and some will remain in short supply (all support staff) to meet the requirements of an Expeditionary Air Force.

Stick with it guys - its gonna still be great fun:ok:

BEagle 7th Feb 2004 01:32

I do hope your old Uhhhhrrrrrmuuuuurrrrrrrrrikan aeroplanes - and their digitally remastered Locjkheed Liars' J-siblings hold together until ve kann to you das A400M Wunderflugzeug being providing are. Hopefully my EADS chums will listen as attentively to the comments of the potential end-users (whether Drivers, Airframe or Folks-in-the-Back) as the C-17 designers did...??

But a whacking great engine driving an 8-scimitar blade propellor all controlled by one lever and lots of FADEC? Hmm, not much risk there then. Going OK at the moment, nevertheless!

Beermonkey 7th Feb 2004 02:28

Impiger, I wouldn't call a reduction of 7000 personnel relatively small. That's the same amount of commitments, probably more to be carried by fewer people? I love my Job and cannot imagine doing anything else, but sooner or later guys and girls will start to vote with their feet in droves. Unless of course we are just going to become part of the Lakenheath wing, in which case I'll look forward to getting a Burger King outside the PBF in the not too distant future!
Snafu, you're obviously not a people person are you?! :=

Tilt&Gain 7th Feb 2004 04:20

If any Scottish base is to be closed my money would be on Kinloss. MRA4 late and massively over budget? Sounds like a prime candidiate for an easy, no forethought, no long term consideration fix.

SirPeterHardingsLovechild 7th Feb 2004 04:43

Allow me to quash any rumour along the lines of -

there will be no enforced retirements but if there are the package will be substanially less than the one offered to us in the mid 90s
The terms are laid down somewhere in an important scribbly manual somewhere (QR's?)

Redundancy Packages are based on two criteria.

How long you've done, and how long you've got left.

Both straight line graphs, one sloping up, the other down.

To get the most wedge, you will need to be at the high intersection of the graphs.

Are you still with me?

Basically, if you've got 5 years to run on your present engagement, then you will be at that intersection.

eg. If you were on a 22 year engagement you would get the most dosh if you left on redundancy at the 17 year point, because:-

a) You would get 18 months salary ('cos you've got 5 years left)
b) You'd get 17/22ths of a pension
c) and 17/22ths of a gratuity
and you can commute some of the b) above

Similar calculations for Wodney engagements.

The graphs don't slope too steeply, but if you only only had a year left, you might only get your bus fare home and one less trip to the gas chamber.

Any questions?

Ay theng you

But I haven't heard anything about redundancies. Its just my specialist subject.

cheekeymonkey 7th Feb 2004 16:32

Muppet Leader....: Yup, that's what I'm saying....mind you the info is second hand...but it came from on high...nigher than the harry staiche's of this world too....;)

SPHL....interesting info...thanks!:ok: Excuse us all for sounding in the dumps, guess were all fed up with the Govt. constantly cutting the budget...and that usually leads to redundancies...!:hmm:

ere....can I interest you in some lovely carpet...!? or how about some curtains maybe....!? :E

Redundancies versus Recruits

Chaps,

All the recruiters have had their targets revised down for the next three years by between 15 and 25%.

Therefore manpower IS going to fall in any case.

With the RN stealing both Aircraftsman, JTs and Phots to fill gaps who knows what the RAF manpower total will be.

:ooh:

Pylot 7th Feb 2004 23:31

Retention bonus supended?

Is that for real? The AFB liaison team said it was in for 5 years prior to review. Anyone?

Stan Bydike 8th Feb 2004 02:24

Pylot,

It won't be suspended. Just reduced to zero:D
