What is the best “GIZZIT” you have personally liberated, for the crew room wall?

A whole F104 Starfighter wing from a Belgian squadron. I hasten to add that it was not attached at the time! Placed it on a palette and then covered it with riggery-type spares and toolboxes. Made a very nice, if slightly sharp edged, table for the crewroom.

Was obviously rumbled at the table's grand unveiling ceremony!

I must admit to helping to steal one of those beautiful, rubber mats from inside the ASWOC at Sig many years ago, and another from outside the Family resteraunt on the same trip.

It so p***&ed off the USN Base commander that he sent a P£ to Ice Station Kilo to get them back no questions asked.

Did I get a roasting from my boss, but at least we cleaned them.

'Aquired' a massive 'RMP Crime prevention banner'.
On a similar theme, did a visit to Coditz some years ago. It had only just finished being a nut house. It was also the 500 year anniversary of the Schloss (THE Castle) which had a very nice 50' banner proclaiming the fact over the old gate house. Obviously, it was 'procured'.

Posted to Akrotiri in mid-1970s, I arrived about 17:00 on a Sunday night. Didn't know anyone of course but bumped into a mate on a Nimrod det from Luqa. Invited by the lads to sample the delights of Limassol and got thoroughly pi$$ed. On the way back to Akkers the Luqa crew decided they needed a souvenir and so I found myself helping them to unbolt the TPMH sign from outside the hospital, after having been on the island for about six hours.

I think the sign made its way back to Luqa but I never saw any of them again!

During BFT we had 2 weeks of leadership training in the USA, canoeing and paintballing mostly; tough stuff. We drove past a McD's late one night that had a large Stars & Stripes outside. A suitable momento we thought. A small team leapt out of the van and staggered across to find the flag pole was rather tall. After much huffing and, well, the other thing, one guy decided to climb the first 10ft, hang on the rope and pull it down. Good plan apart from he almost ripped his tackle off on the cleat on the way down! Apart from a rip in the jeans the flag did come down though. Warning sign one: it took 3 of us to carry the flag to the van. Next morning we tried to unravel the flag indoors, warning sign two, unable. Outside, it filled the car park. It was huge, probably 30ft x 20ft. There's a photo at Linton in 115 Course's line book if someone would like to verify. On Boss's orders we took it back the next day because it wouldn't fit it in a suitcase. The McD's staff were very appreciative because we were on their side (apparently) during the recently won GW. Happy days, Pure Genious.

Lifted a dug-in Argie Mbenz 4x4 off a mountain and after much hot wiring etc (ignition cables all cut) we had a very useful Sqn hack.

Afterwards discovered it was approx 2000kilos not lbs as thought!! still Wessy 5 lifted it, just!! well sort of slid down hill until we had flying speed.

Whilst serving in Belize liberated the AAC flag off the flagpole! Also at RIAT managed to empty the Boeing hospitality tent of a flag, some pictures and a large Boeing sign.:ok:

Snowed in at Antwerp some years ago, myself and colleagues climbed to top of Hilton hotel roof (approx 100 - 120 ft above the main square) covered in snow and liberated a Hilton flag and Belgian flag, with one of the guys (you know who you are!) shouting "Leeds, Leeds, Leeds" at the top of his voice, locals looked on in amazement.

205 Sqn groundcrew removed a giant bee on a 15ft pole from in front of the CB Battalion HQ, Sangley Point, Manila, got it into the back of a Shack and erected it later in Changi. Some thieving b'stds from the UK stole it a few months later. Where is it now?

If you stare closely at the small "antlers" on the stuffed goat in the foyer of the OM at Boulmer you will notice a small hairline crack in one ........

........ as a result of a visiting socially confused WAFU nabbing it, then legging it, then falling over down into one of those huge concrete drain thingys they have there. Said WAFU stands up to find blood all over and 1 broken antler. A bit of instant first aid on both WAFU and antler followed by a bosses instruction to "put the bl&&dy thing back" ends the whole episode.

Belgium 1992 -ish. Liege I think it was, with an RN Sea King detachment for Flanders Fly In. There we were, walking through the town, when we came across a selection of large mannequins displayed in 'artistic' poses on city features such as fountains, benches and statues etc. It seemed like a good idea at the time, obviously, to befriend one and take him back to Culdrose to reside in ??? sqn crewroom. We did the deed and posed the blue man (he was made of polystyrene, painted blue, and cast in a seated position) in each bar that we subsequently patronised. Eyebrows raised throughout the evening, but no arrests were forthcoming and amazingly he made it back to our town centre hotel unscathed. Imagine our sober surprise the following morning to discover that he was still blue, still polystyrene, and still 8 FEET TALL! The reality of smuggling such an obvious civic treasure un-noticed on the crew bus back to the airfield was suddenly clear! We did the decent thing and left him to enjoy the delights of his home town - albeit from a slightly different perspective. As far as I know he is still adorning the (internal) fire escape making an eternal bid for freedom from the somewhat downmarket hotel. If you see him say hello....:rolleyes:

From a matelot - my ship HMS **** got a manoverboard dummy from a french frigate in Brest naval base. The intrepid personnel sneaked onboard past the QM, "acquired" said dummy, returned it to the ship without being spotted. OOD hits roof and dummy is returned to French ship without being caught. All personnel came home for tea and medals :)

"Solid" life belt from Star Ferry Hong Kong c.1967.Never made its way back to 45 Sqn Singapore regrettably.Several very persuasive Chinese gentlemen had eventually caught up with us in a Kowloon bar and suggested that we may like to return said trophy.We did.
