US Army UH-60 crashes in Afghanistan
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - All four American troops aboard were killed on Thursday when a U.S. Army UH-60 "Black Hawk" helicopter crashed east of Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, the U.S. military said.
The U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Florida, said the crash was apparently accidental and that there was no indication that it resulted from ground fire.
"There were four crew members aboard and all four were killed," Navy Cmdr. Dan Gage, a spokesman for the command, told Reuters following the crash at approximately 10 a.m. EST, 7:30 p.m. in Afghanistan.
The reason for the crash about 6 miles from the big base was not clear although there was no indication that ground fire caused the incident, Gage said. He said the transport helicopter was on a routine training mission.
The "Black Hawk" is the Army's front-line utility helicopter and is flown by two pilots and one or two additional crew members. It can also carry an entire 11-man infantry squad.
At least four other U.S. troops have died in about a half-dozen other helicopter crashes and hard landings in Afghanistan since the U.S. military launched action there in October of 2001, a month after the attacks on America.
