Even Santa can't avoid the dreaded Staneval. A letter in todays Telegraph from Peter Smales reports :-

Father Christmas is alive and well. How do I know? I was at Heathrow the other day and I saw him having his annual flying assessment before flying off to deliver a few presents.

Our skies are crowded enough. With this low-level roof-top flying, it was good to see the CAA examiner doing his stuff.

They were sitting there in the sleigh, reindeer champing at the bit, waiting for their slot among all the other air traffic. Suddenly I noticed the examiner had a rifle beside him. "What's that all about" I asked someone in a peaked hat. "Oh that" he replied. "Father Christmas doesn't know it yet, but to keep him on his toes, he is going to lose an engine on take-off".
