Thumbs up JSF - naming

I have heard from a very reliable source at a high level in Central Staffs that a suitable name for the JSF is being actively considered. Seems that 'TEMPEST' is being well received - a modern Typhoon/Tempest match to the WWII pair.

Anyone else heard the rumour or can flesh out the details?

Perhaps a name from Fleet Air Arm history might be more in keeping?

It's the Joint Strike Fighter.

It will equip all arms, of all services, of Western Europe and North America, and of other Western allies.

It will be versatile, adaptable, survivable. It will be capable, fearsome, difficult to defeat. It will be effective either alone or in company of others.

It will be swift, stealthy, and deadly in attack.

It will inspire awe in those who follow it, and terror in those who oppose it.

It will epitomise strength, stamina, killer instinct; harsh justice, loyalty, tradition, rightness.

The name should be something which is common to both Europe and North America.

It should be something tangible, visceral, emotional, relevant, inspiring.

I am completely unbiased in this matter....

Call it the Wolf.

Given the current state of military procurement, how about the Dumbo Blanco?

A very fine statement Blue Wolf, and a very emotive case to name the aircraft

This will not be a Spit or a Corsair.

More like a Defiant or a Buffalo.....

PlasticCab..............

How can it be a "Dumbo Blanco" Its not as if BWoS are the Prime!!

How about we call it Hawk so that the government gets a really good vfm solution for advanced jet training instead of the 128.

FJJP, sorry to disappoint, but I'm like this naturally....no need for chemical additives here.....

Thanks solo. That would be my third choice. However, if for any reason the High Command should elect not to take advantage of the superb suggestion I have offered (which I wasn't even planning on invoicing them for) then FO Max S's suggestion gets my second vote.

Gnadenburg; I guess that means that in NZ we will have to call our version "Aircraft which is not allowed to fly and have guns at the same time, for this is evil, and not what I believed in as a teenage protester during the Vietnam war; all western pigs should lie down and die in the face of the glorious socialist revolution, wherein those who are incapable or undeserving will be supported by those who have motivation and/or intelligence, or I'm not the New Zealand Prime Minister."

This is a bit long-winded, obviously, so it would probably be abreviated to the "Helen Clark Unarmed Peace Aeroplane Please Don't Invade Us Nice Chinese Or Indonesian People."

I still think that WOLF would be a brilliant name. No, I'm not bitter; why do you ask?

Talking

I have it on good authority that for the UK it will be referred to as the Lockheed Martin 'Reefer':

Well, it is a joint asset, man!

The Lockheed Martin 'Whatever the DoD decides it'll be called, tahnk you very much, our British Cousins', probably. So some sort of bird of prey or predator? There must be one or two such left.

We tried influencing the US when we claimed we'd be ordering the F-111: the idea was that if the UK (aided by Australia) came up with a name, the Americans would adopt it. The Australians came up with 27 names, 26 of them aborignal in origin, while we came up with the Richmond, the Harrogate or the London.

After DCAS (I think it was) told the appropriate committee to go away and think again, we settled on 'Merlin'.

Then we cancelled it and the USAF carried on calling it the F-111, as did the Aussies, who, from reading between the lines, thought that trying to give the thing a formal name was a bad idea in the first place.
