Falkland's veterans
Anyone know the background to this? Particularly why they weren't able to get seats at civil rates? Aren't there enough seats available?
Anyone know who the charter is with, who the pilots are, what the route is?
BBC
Quote:
"The only route into the islands is by civilian aircraft through Argentina, which isn't viable for us, or by RAF aircraft. We were unable to get an RAF plane - probably because the government doesn't want to set a precedent of flying veterans around the world - or even negotiate civilian rates for the flight.
So we've chartered our own plane, which will be flown by a couple of Falklands veterans who are pilots".

The Times:
Baroness Thatcher told Falklands veterans who are returning to the battlefields for a 20th anniversary remembrance service that they had “achieved the impossible”.
Lady Thatcher spent more than an hour talking to the 217 veterans — some with their partners — at Gatwick before they flew to the islands. Jim Davidson, the television comic who helped to raise funds for the trip after being refused government money, asked the veterans to “cheer for their commander-in-chief, Lady Thatcher”.

I may be wrong (happy to be corrected), but my belief is that former members of US Armed forces are given free flights on all military transport (on a stand-by basis). A friend of my old man travels all round the world, with his wife, on holidays with the transport provided as a perk of his former career.
Must be nice to work for a government that appreciates its military!
But I may be wrong!

Don't know if it's the same flight, but Air 2000 have a Boeing 757 going down South with a bunch of Falkland Veterans on board
The Captain has operated the F4 in the Falklands, so is not a 'veteran' as such (no axe to grind, He's a good mate of mine and anyway I missed the conflict by 2 weeks to the eternal relief of my Mum!). Don't know who the FO is.
