that word
anyone watch the 100 greatest britons last night? on the item on barnes wallis it should part of the film, it changed the dogs name to digger. will the grave at scampton have the name changed? in answer to the film company i think it was associated british films. and richard todd was the first british soldier to parachute in on operation overlord.
Just a numbered other
Whilst I can sympathise with Mrs Sporkmann, who points out that 1600 of her compatriots perished in the raid, She surely cannot deny that these dams were legitimate military targets.
Can she say the same of Coventry cathedral.

They've tried various ruses to disguise Nig.ger's real name. They tried 'Digger' (could be seen as being rude to antipodeans), 'Blackie' (could be seen as being rude to black mates) and just cutting scenes involving Nig.ger. Personally I'd like to see a version with the word 'Nig.ger' replaced by freeze frame and a clumsy voice-over saying 'Anonymous black Labrador' every time Nig.ger's real name should have been used. If nothing else, it would draw attention to the stupid PC-ruining of the currently used print.
Why not just introduce the movie with a caveat stating "This film was made 50 years ago. Certain language, which was acceptable at the time, may be considered offensive by some contemporary viewers. However, such language has an historical importance relevant to the film and consequently this film is being shown as it was originally produced for the benefit of the wider viewing audience"
Incidentally, when 'Lives of the Bengal Lancers' or somesuch was shown on TV when I was at University in the 70s, the Asian chaps peed themselves with hysterical laughter. When we asked them what was so funny, they translated the bits which were in Urdu(?) - they wouldn't have made the Mary $hitehouse watershed, it seems!
Presumably Frau Sporkmann thinks that 'The Diary of Anne Frank', 'Schindler's List', 'Carve Her Name with Pride' and other movies should also be banned in the 21st Century?
Perhaps she'd like all copies publicly burned as well........

TRUE STORY (PROBABLY!)
When 617 reformed with the then mighty Tornado (Vice Vulcans) they thought it appropriate that the UK should know they were back. A formation flypast of just about every military airfield was planned. Choosing the formation callsign, yes you've guessed it, N***ER, off they went. Everything went swinmmingly until Alconbury, when the formation checked in: N***ER 2, N***ER 3 etc. Sadly the USAF controller took offence at the callsign and said 'Aircraft calling Alconbury I ain't going to talk to you'. Can anyone corroborate this??? As they say 'Never let the truth get in the way of a good story'.
ANOTHER TRUE STORY
Friend of mine on exchange with US Army, working for a 1 Star US Officer, who coincidentally was black. At a major brief with more stars than a night at the Oscars he was asked for his thoughts on a specific problem area in which he was an expert. Being a straight talking kind of chap he started by saying, 'Gentlemen, I believe the n***er in the wood-pile is.......'. He described the next 10 seconds as the longest of his life! After rewording his sentence he continued, filled with the thought that he would be on the next plane home with his wife and kids. The meeting closed and nothing was said, however, in the car on the way back his boss, you remember the black 1 Star, said 'Did I hear you use the n word?', 'Yes sir' came the sheepish reply, 'Well don't ever use it again will you?' and that was the end of it and he even got promoted at the end of his exchange tour.

THAT word was certainly used for a while as a ground callsign for 617 - management radios etc. It was later changed to something which meant just the same but was less non-PC.

Channel 5 is airing a new documentary on the Dambusters next week, Tuesday at 9pm. Programme synopsis:
"(Dambusters) Documentary about the 1943 bombing raid which knocked out two massive dams in the heart of industrial Germany and was later immortalised in the 1954 film starring Michael Redgrave. Featuring the testimonies of some of the airmen who took part in the raid and contributions from the son of Barnes Wallis, whose bouncing bomb made the raid possible".
